i say we take on big al's contract and get beasley ... they stated they don't want him now that they have Darko, and beasely will see little playing time behind Kevin Love/Webster .. and with NJ getting outlaw/tyrus (our favorites) there's really no one else left in FA .. and don't say Josh Howard.. he's had more injury issues than mike redd and t-mac ...

This shows just how much the Heat were willing to get rid of Beasley.

Maybe he can play a more natural 3 position in Minnesota since he's very undersized at the 4

Beasley's numbers are much better when he plays at the 4.

Kahn is a businessman and he thinks that way...he's stockpiling assets and hoping that he can parlay them into something that works out on the court.

You know what?  I still believe he's gonna figure it out and the Wolves are gonna be at least a decent team in a couple years.

But obviously Pekovic, Darko, Big Al, Love, and Beasley aren't all gonna be playing on that team next season.  Just as Flynn and Rubio can't both be the starting point guards in a couple years.

I kinda get what Kahn is doing, though.  When you have a young team with no real stars, you don't just trot out a lineup with potential and hope they all gel together and turn into a championship squad.  You continuously stockpile assets until either one of them turns into a star that you can build around or you find a way to turn those assets into real stars that can be the foundation for your team.

People think Kahn is weird because he gets all these players at the same positions and whatever, but what are his options, really?  He doesn't have much to work with now.  I think the '07 trades that created the Big 3 showed all of us what's possible when a team stockpiles young talent and trades them opportunistically.
Never forget the Champs of '08, or the gutsy warriors of '10.

Kahn is the worst GM in the NBA.  When, after a trade, one team signs Lebron James, and the other team gets a former lottery pick BUST with an attitude problem, that is not a good deal under any circumstances.

Kahn just made a huge mistake ( the guy never fails to surprise on how bad he is).

Him taking Beas allows Heat to now sign Miller.

Why should he care about the Heat getting Miller?  He's got to improve his team, and in a location like Minnesota -- where they're not going to sign many impact free agents -- taking a gamble on Beasley is worth it, I think.

Absolutely. If we'd got Beasley for nothing, the blog would have been doing backflips.

interesting news.
downside: it will be easier for miami to hire other players
upside: no more "sheed for beasley" posts.

This is true.  But putting a young player like Beasley on a veteran team with real leadership like the Cs could help him really develop.  Putting Beasley on a terrible lottery team in Minnesota where he will want to be the man will only help him develop more bad habits.

I like a sheed/baby for Big Al deal.

I like the trade for Minny but Kahn is by far the strangest executive in the NBA.  I understand stockpiling assets and such but what is the point if none of those assets can prove themselves because they are buried behind other players at the same position.  And his 'assets' are like draft picks...you hope to trade for one with potential.

I'm changing the thread title some to indicate that the Wolves gave up more for him.

Swapping 1st round picks is going to cost the Wolves a lottery pick at some point in the future in all likelyhood.

When you stink as bad as Minny does, accumulating assets is all you can do.

And frankly, if this facilitates Mike Miller going to the Heat, Kahn will have just done a huge favor for Boston, Orlando and LA.  I mean, you've got Wade, Bosh, LeBron and Marion Chalmers, a 6'1'' PG who averaged a whopping 7.1 points and 3.4 assists last season...and you're going to spend your last available dollars under the cap on a power forward who loves to shoot the three?

They're not there yet, but I'm pretty impressed with the assets that Minny has been able to add while staying at a reasonable salary number.  They're still a piece or two away, but when a seller emerges, they'll certainly have the pieces to buy.  Beasley will work well in their offense, too.  They didn't give up very much.

Nice move.

I'm not sure if this is accurate or not ... but I read somewhere that it was the Wolves who had the right to swap picks with Miami if they choose to. Not the other way around.

Again, not sure if that is accurate or not.

Haven't found confirmation on which team chooses to swap picks ... but I found a timeline on the picks

Quote
The swap of first-round picks in tonight's Heat-Timberwolves trade can be pushed out to seven years, I'm told.
That is from Jerry Zgoda's (beat writer for Wolves) twitter account
