I was just about to post how we don't need anything from the Cav's roster.  However, Anthony Parker is a bit intriguing.  He's not the defender I'd want at the 3 and he is older than Ray; however, he's 6-6, which is better than TA, and can absolutely shoot the lights out.

While I'd hope we could do better for Sheed, if we can't, I could live with him.

We need Varejao.  He's exactly what the Celtics need.

Agreed.  Love to have him.

Sad that the first thing we think after the Cavs lose Lebron is how we can rape them of players.

I agree Varejao is a nice piece. Hustler and defends and boards.  Does not need the ball.

I wrote this somewhere else, but if I were Cleveland, I'd offer Varejao AND Boobie Gibson for 'Sheed's contract and Big Game Davis.  Not sure if Danny would do it or not, Sideshow >> Davis, but those contracts aren't good.

But, SOME contender would gladly take Varejao, even if it meant having to absorb Boobie Gibson's three remaining years (at abour $14M total).

Cleveland basically has four bad contracts right now.

AV, the deal's not too bad except that he's a player than makes more sense on a squad like ours instead of a rebuilding team.  He's got another four years.

Mo Williams, he has another three years at about $9M per.  Don't see anyone taking that deal on, as Mo really ought to be coming off the bench a la Jet Terry.  Too much to pay for a good-but-not-great combo guard.

Boobie Gibson, a dumb contract they offered him that runs three more years, about $4.5M per.

Antwan Jamison, two more years.

If they could package AV and Boobie, to us or to anyone else, they would probably not have much cap space (if any) for two more seasons but could basically do a full rebuild in 2012.  They'd really only have Mo under contract for 2012-2013, and I bet they'd be able to trade him for an expiring contract in twelve months.

Play Hickson a lot, see if he's really a building block.

Suck really bad for two seasons, get some high-lotto picks.  Buy up as many 1st rounders as you can (think of all that money you're not playing LeBron now).

No guarantees, but they'd be in position to start fresh in the not-too-distant future.  But, use the appeal of AV to get some other long-term deals off the books.

Unfortunately, the only guys the C's would want/need are the only guys the Cavs are not going to want to give up.  Varajao, Powe, and Hickson are pretty much the only guys on their rosters who make about what they deserve to make or less.  Those are the guys they will use to try to unload some of their bad contracts like Mo Williams and Antawn Jamison...but they will give them away.

That makes no sense to me.  It may have made sense two days ago before we brought in Jermaine, but with KG, BBD, Jermaine, and eventually Perk, the 4/5 is a place of depth.  Right now at the 2/3 spot the only person we have backing up Pierce and Allen who we can rely on to any degree is Tony Allen, and I'd argue he's an inferior player to BBD and Jermaine (or Perk, however you want to look at the backup situation at 4/5).

We can't afford to blow our last big chip on another big and leave Pierce and Allen to be run into the ground all year and all playoffs.

I don't think Perk will be effective when he comes back.  He already wasn't that good, except defensively.  Basically, I think he'll stink when he comes back.  He'll probably be better the following year.  I like having Varejao for the future too.

Agree we need a Pierce backup.  But if you're willing to accept Parker than we might as well just sign a vet. min backup....it should be easy to match Parker's level with the vet. min.  Regarding the bigs, I think you're relying too much on:

KG....28 minutes max please during reg. season.
Baby.....nice player but short
O'Neal.....great pickup....injury history
Perk......I don't want to rely on much from Perk

The C's have shown themselves to be interested in antoher legitimate big by talking to Kwame Brown.  I'd rather have Varejao than Brown, who's spent alot of his career on various benches.  I'd take him, but I'd rather have Varejao.

Passing up on Anderson Varejao because of Jermaine O'Neal is akin to passing up on Jameer Nelson because you have Eddie House.

Seconded.

I don't see how we'll be able to pry him away from the Cavs though. We might be able to get Delonte West or Parker though.

Yeah, I don't expect Varejao to be available either. It's a Hail Mary.

How about trying to convince Big Z to come here for the vet minimum?  It would leave us the Sheed's contract and provide a great backup to O'Neal.

I'd be shocked if he doesn't go to Miami (or retire).  Isn't he buddy-buddy with LeBron?  Miami's pretty desperate for big men, and he'd be pretty close to ideal (in a backup role) for what they need from their 5.
