Agent: Nets, Outlaw agree to deal

Forward Travis Outlaw has agreed to a five-year, $35 million deal with the Nets, his agent, Bill Duffy, told ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher.

The 25-year-old Outlaw averaged 8.7 points and 3.6 rebounds in 23 games for the Los Angeles Clippers after being acquired as part of a trade that sent Marcus Camby to the Portland Trail Blazers. In 11 games for Portland last season, Outlaw averaged 9.9 points and 3.5 rebounds.

Drafted in the first round by Portland in 2003, Outlaw has averaged 9.5 points and 3.4 rebounds in seven NBA seasons.

There goes one of the wings off the board.  IMO Outlaw got a very good deal is getting overpaid now.  No way we were going to spend that much on him, not that we even could.

Too much $ for him. Nets should have just saved their cash.

I agree, that's overpaying in terms of his real value (although, sadly, that might actually be market value based upon the other crazy deals.)

The thing I worry about with Outlaw is whether he's plateaued. He's still young, but he's basically been the exact same player for the last three seasons.

Poop.

That's a lot of money for a guy that's pretty much a one-trick pony on the offensive end.  Something like 85% of his shot attempts were jumpers.  He hits a good percentage of them, but not like he's Mike Miller good.

Worst part is that probably sets a floor on how much Miller gets paid.  Confirmation that Miller's most likely an above-MLE player.  Think our only chance, if that's a direction we want to pursue, is a sign-and-trade with Washington, get Miller to agree to 'Sheed's contract + 25% and give Washington something like a protected 1st rounder for their help.  Hate giving up draft picks knowing that we'll have to rebuild soon, but don't see how we'll get a premier backup wing any other way.

Well, at least the Nets signed someone.  Their cap space is still pretty loose, and they're adding youngish talented pieces, so...good for them, I guess. :-\

Kind of confused why the Nets would sign a wing though, when they could be getting the ultimate wing tonight, unless Outlaw is their backup to LeBron.

It's not like New Jersey is overrun with talent, anyway.  Who's their best wing now?  Courtney Lee?  If LeBron *were* to sign with Jersey (very much a longshot, in my opinion), there would still be room for Outlaw.  He's one of the better shooters that's available, so he'd be a good fit next to LeBron.

I'm scratching my head a little on this. They already have Courtney Lee & Terrence Williams, and I personally like both of those guys over Outlaw (at the very least I think it's fair to say they're in the same ball park). On top of that they just added Damion James who has looked OK during the two games I've watched.

I guess a sharp shooter is a good addition to the core of Lopez & Harris, but I'm with you guys, I'm not crazy about this one.

That's true they had CDR but he's gone.

Yikes.

I guess now I understand why DA is looking at Rasual Butler and Antoine Wright.... they should be cheap!

That is a ton of money. If TA gets offered anywhere in the neighborhood of that I will personally drive him to the airport.

I'd love to see him back but if that's the market for a wing with those numbers TA is gone. I know Outlaw is much younger but TA showed what he can do against the elite wings on a big stage.

Luckily the top flight teams don't have that kind of money to offer TA and I doubt he would go to a bad team. I think the team to watch out for is OKC.

Outlaw way over Terrance Williams...especially if he regains 08-09 form. Terrance Williams might end up being better someday, but not this year.
