Celtics Looking Strongly at Frank to Replace Thibodeau as Assistant

7/07/2010 2:38 PM ET By Chris Tomasson

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Former New Jersey head coach Lawrence Frank has a good chance of landing on Boston's bench as an assistant to replace Tom Thibodeau, who left last month to become Chicago's head coach.

"He's a very strong candidate,'' Celtics coach Doc Rivers said in an interview Wednesday with FanHouse.

Rivers interviewed Frank on Tuesday at the Air Tran Orlando Summer League. The two went to dinner.

"I've always liked Lawrence,'' Rivers said. "I think he would be a great assistant on our staff.''

Rivers said Frank, fired by the Nets last November and who recently has been working as an NBA TV analyst, wants the job. But Rivers said it's not a done deal.

"I've got to talk to two more guys, and hopefully those guys won't go somewhere else,'' said Rivers, not identifying the two other possible candidates. "I'm in no rush.''

Thibodeau, a defensive specialist, was Boston's lead assistant.

Not really new nes, but some news that we care about in light of the LeBron, Wade, and Bosh love fest that has been going around in the world of basketball.

I wonder who the other two canidates are?

My favorite Lawrence Frank Moment.  He was on ESPN first take and just did a segment with the woman host and then challenged Skip Baliss when Skip was trash talking Lebron, the screen cuts to Skip. Frank thinks his Mic is cut, and he says, "S#%&!, if i had that bleeper on my team i'd still be coaching, I wouldnt be here!"

Then after that segment the woman host comes back on and apologizes for Frank.  It was great

I would love getting Lawrence.  I really think there would be no drop off from Thibodeau leaving.

The dust is beginning to settle....and it looks good for the Celtics so far... Summer league doesn't look like quite as much of a loss as it might have...Bosh and Wade in Miami looks good, but not toooo overpowering, most of the big salaries are staying home.  Ray coming back, and Frank signed as defensive coach would be the cream.  Come play with us for a year, Shaq.  The Boston Celtics and Shaq can make history together.

No dropoff?

I don't know about that. Everyone praised Tom T for being a defensive guru. His players, his former head coaches.

Frank is good, but I haven't heard any such praise about him. I live in NYC, and the media here routinely bashed him (but that may have been a Knick/anti-Net thing).

Thibs has set the foundation.  The players with a little guidance from Frank, and I'm sure he'll provide more than a little, can take it over from there.
