Unprecedented!!!  Home town discount!!  Celtics Pride!!  All About the team!! http://forums.celticsblog.com/index.php?topic=39879.0

Sorry, what a joke all of this is when talking about Paul Pierce's resigning.  Wade, Bosh and Lebron are all starting salaries at around 14 million next year.  PP is going to be making about the same.  And as the Heat players' salaries are increasing, so will their abilities.  Whereas Paul's skills will be declining throughout his 4 year contract yet still paid similarly.  I can't believe how much pierce was praised for this "discount" he took when he gets paid similarly to 3 players who will all be better than him for those 4 seasons.  He didn't take a discount.  He got paid.  Sorry.  And I did think this at the time of his signing too, never once praised him for it.  It's just now more maddening realizing that his contract is going to handicap us for the majority of Rondo's career and prime and the Heat are going to dominate us because their stars were willing to take as big discounts as our glorified captain did when worth way more than him.

And Pierce's money is probably what kept us from resigning Tony.  He got 3 yrs 9.6 mil from Memphis?  Man, if Paul could have taken 2 million less we could used that and offered Tony 2 yrs 9 mil easily.  Now we're screwed for the current and the future.

Sorry, I had to rant.  I'm prepared to take heat for it, but it is how I feel, don't think I'll change that.  Unless Avery Bradley can magically defend Kobe, Wade, and Lebron or Danny has some other backup wing he gets us with sheed's contract who turns out to be a great fit and defend also.  The options are becoming slim fast...

I agree, Paul screwed us.  If he wanted to help us he'd have taken less.  I mean come on, presumably the big year for us is 2012 and he'll be on the roster for like 15million.  That's more than rondo!  hell thats more than lebron wade or bosh. now if u wanna talk about helping the team, look at those guys...what pierce did was put us in a wheelchair.  he knew being competitive now was a priority and he exploited us. were officially crippled!!

“Paul screwed us”   >:( ::) :-\

This is Pierce’s last contract he’ll ever sign. Him and Ray took substantial cuts. Paul left 21.5Mil on the table, and Ray could have easily got more elsewhere.

What did you want him to do?  What would have been a good deal?

We are over the cap right now and I’m not even counting the cap number for Paul this year. That means that with a roster of KG, Rondo, JO, Baby, Perkins, Sheed, and Avery Bradley, The Captain could play for free and we’d still be over the cap. So this in pretty ridiculous to criticize.

If your mad about the length? What is a player who’s one of the elite scorers of his generation, who hasn’t started to see REAL decline, supposed to do... sign and two year deal then play the market after the lockout? No way.

And the fact that Pierce will be on contract for more than Rondo in 2012 is a waste of breath. We’ve saved so much money with that Rondo contract it’s ridiculous. If we waited until he reached UFA it’d be a max deal. So just switch the numbers in your head if it makes you uncomfortable.

Now I’m sorry for the rant, but what your saying is IMO VERY out of order.

How did Paul "screw" us?

He opted out to take less money.  At that point, the team could 1) sign him to a below-market deal, or 2) move on.  They willingly chose to sign him for a discount.

Paul saved Wyc something like $16 million this season in salary and luxury tax, which can potentially be reinvested in the team.  I don't see how Pierce can in any way be portrayed as greedy.

I don't think he "screwed" us at all, but i also don't think he really took a paycut either. I think he signed a cushy final big deal of his career. Yeah, he could have made more for one season, but with the impending lockout he probably would have made a lot less the following years. so yeah, "paycut" now, but overall the best deal he could hope to get at his age, better than playing out his contract and trying again next year.

The only benefit i see is if Wyc was suddenly getting cold feet about spending so much for the '10-'11 season...but it's looking more and more like they'll go the cheap route and let sheed retire and just take the savings as free agency passes them by. with all the deals going on it seems like they could have gotten SOMETHING done to get a real wing backup. I'll keep my fingers crossed that there's a josh howard deal in the works (he'd be a great 3rd wing for us) but until proven otherwise, i'll due to the lack of movement and lack of rumors, i'll assume they're taking the savings.

1 post + any comment concerning a wheelchair...hmm where have I seen this before..

I'm on board with overpaying (if he does in fact slow down his efficient play by 2012) Paul for him to retire a C as it appeared Danny was as well.

Not to mention but recent reports by the Herald and Globe upon his official signing have the last year as a mutual option, meaning he or the Celtics could opt out. This could well be just a three year deal.

Pierce saved this team tens of millions of dollars over the length of this contract. Possibly as much as $50-60 million when luxury tax concerns and the possibility not having to pay his last year is all thrown in their.

At least somewhere here is willing to admit that they're fine with overpaying for Paul near the end of his contract.  It's just mind-boggling to me with all this talk about substantial paycuts him and Ray took.  Who was going to pay a 35 yr old wing more than $10 mil per year after not being able to buy a basket for the last 5 games of the Finals??  I think the best he could've hoped for was the full MLE for 3 years, which is still less than $20 mil.

And Pierce, as many aging players do, was hurt a lot during the season, and had a bad Finals as well.  There MAY have been some other team that whiffed on the other big free agents and gone after Pierce, but I doubt it would've been for much, if anything more than he signed for with the Celtics.  And it's simple math.  Pierce turned down $21 mil guaranteed for $61 mil guaranteed.  If Pierce had another injury plagued season and flamed out in the playoffs again, what kind of contract do you think he would be up for at age 34?

I love Pierce as a player and am grateful for what he's done  as a Celtic, but this is getting crazy.

he screwed us by killing our cap when kg and ray leave.  in 2012 were gonna be paying paul over $15million!!!  thats more than rondo!  hell thats more than wade bosh and lebron.  how did he not screw us? were in so much cap trouble in the next years that we refused to sign tony to a 3 year $9.7million deal.  thats ludicrous.  ill bet ray left close to 20 million on the table....lebron and bosh did. wade left almost 30!!! so get off pauls jock...i know hes our home town guy, i know he brought us a banner, but lets be unbiased and talk about how he screwed us over in 2012 and beyond. if he wanted to help us he would have not opted out and taken his huge payday then taken a big pay cut and let us work his contract to give us flexibility in 2012.  thats what my hometown hero would have done

I think we overpaid JO at the Full MLE. But I think it was because we were desperate for a Center.

Depending on what Paul's first year base salary on his new 61 million dollar deal...we only probably had a little less than 3 or 4 million right beneath the luxury tax threshold.

I think Nate is the only guy left we should give more than the "Vet Min" that we have Bird Rights over.

We really can't target anyone else.
No Bird rights on Nate.

Nice little nugget hopefully that will get some that were expecting a Rondo led Championship in 2012 off the ledge.

the point is that this year doesnt matter...wyc had him signed for 21.5mil this year so paul should have just taken that.  the problem is the amount of money we hafta pay paul when we lose kg and rays contracts.  hes gonna be getting 50% more than rondo wont even be 50% the player rondo is.  good luck luring in a FA when they see pierce is making it impossible to get a another stud and fill out a roster.

thats nice but the year that matters is 2012.  so wed hafta convince a FA to come in 2012 play a bad season with us and hope that when pauls contract is over next year that we can sign someone.  if it was up going into the 2012 season then we could sign 2 FAs or trade kg/ray for a star and sign a major FA.  because of paul we can only do one of those things....unless pauls contract is used to trade for a star
