If Pierce and Ray do leave, the C's pretty much have to trade Kevin Garnett.  The question I have is what type of market will the C's find for KG.  At the time Ray and Paul leave, it will be well into free agency, so that could affect what teams might do (i.e. if Lebron still hasn't signed the Cavs might make a hard push for KG or teams that lose out on the big names, might want KG as a secondary plan).

I realize the Celtics won't get great value back, but there have to be some trades out there worth exploring.  And again this is only if Pierce and Ray leave because at that point it would be time to go into rebuilding mode.

I was figuring Hickson level players would be the best the C's could do if they were to trade Garnett.  I can't see much better value out there for an over the hill star making close ot 40 million over the next two seasons.  The only caveat is if the C's could swing a sign and trade to some team.  I mean would the Hawks want Garnett in exchange for Joe Johnson, for example.  I know the Raptors would be more then happy to take KG if we took Hedo along with Bosh.  The problem is by the time the C's would trade KG most of the free agents will be signed and those guys might not actually want to come to Boston if Rondo and Perkins is all that is on the team.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah

I think it was Nick that had a "crazy/sort of not crazy idea" on the front page about shipping him to Dallas for Dampier's non-guaranteed contract + other pieces. Cuban might actually be up for that. They're in desperation win-now mode for the next couple of years.

They absolutely do not need to trade Garnett in that situation (although he may nudge them in that direction...or retire).  Unless they get good value for KG (which I am not sure is out there right now), they are better off holding onto him, and biding their time.  He may be more valuable next summer, or at the deadline next year.  And he also would be very valuable to a team trying to reload both as a player and a mentor.

Again, and I can't say this enough.  Only make deals if the value works.  Teams that blow things up just for the sake of it almost always live to regret it.

An expiring contract by itself is a good trade.

Anything above that is excellent work by Danny Ainge because given KG's age + contract + recent injuries ... Boston have no right to anything more than that.

An expiring contract is doing very well.

I might be in the minority but I would rather get a good young player with a contract younger than Garnett who needs to be moved by their team. Jefferson, Iguodala, Biedrins. The last two deals would need to include good younger players.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

I totally agree that this nightmare scenerio doesn't just automatically mean that KG has to go.  However, I do think that this would be one of the most dramatic rise and fall stories of any franchise over a 5 year period ever if this were to happen.

I certainly had Biedrins on the type of player that could come back.  Okafor would be another.  I think Portland might be interested as well, but the trade of Webster and the release of Gomes limits their ability to get the salary number.  Gallinari from the Knicks would probably be available.  Deng from Chicago.

All good players, but certainly not equal value.

You make it sound like its an unexpected fall?  This is the deal they entered into.  It was a short window, and it was going to end.  Now, the hope is that it does not take another 20 years for a new window to open.

Unfortunately I can't tell you which or how many quality free agents we could get in the case that Ray and Paul leave.  I can tell you that  Rondo Garnett Perk framework is not as crappy as people are making it out to be.....

If you could add Joe Johnson, Mike Miller and Josh Childress for example....you have a good team.

  • Rondo = Good

Yeah...35 wins tops.  KG or Rondo would become our number 1 scoring option.  Ouch.

But you can't.  You could add Johnson and a bunch of vet minimum guys.  Or you could possibly add Miller and Childress (and a bunch of vet minimum guys).  And that is the problem.  It is very tough to renounce 3/4 of your players from a championship level team, and then find a way to replace them without a ton of cap space (they would not have enough to even pay 1 player the max).

Them 2 alone with 3 other scrubs will make the playoffs in the East but, obviously no one wants that.

This seems to be a pretty good breakdown on why Boston cannot create cap room to become players for a big-time free agent this summer.

Yeah.....on the other hand....if you're going to lose Paul and Ray Joe Johnson takes an awful lot of sting out.....
