RealGM boards are discussing reports from a Portland-area radio station that the Blazers will be buying out Ryan Gomes, whose contract is partially guaranteed.

http://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?t=1023764

Presumably, the logic is to clear a little cap space, but it won't amount to much for the Blazers, so I am skeptical of this happening.

Regardless, Gomes' partially guaranteed contract means that he is very likely to be bought out, and become a free agent.

Would you want him back, if he ended up costing more than half of the MLE?

It's tempting, but I'm not sure he fits.  At the 4, we don't need another undersized guy.  As a 3, he's nice, but if this team is really going to contend, I think we need a more dynamic scorer at the 3 than Gomes.  I'd take him at the minimum, but I wouldn't want to blow half the MLE on him.

I tend to agree. Would be a nice addition on the cheap, but I think we have bigger holes to fill with the MLE.

Portland has luxury tax issues after the Brandon Roy + LaMarcus Aldridge + Marcus Camby contract extensions.

Ryan Gomes isn't even a rotation player on their squad so it is a good decision to waive him and save some money.

If we can get him for the minimum we should totally sign him.  No brainer.

For more than that?  Not so much.

I'd love to have Gomes back, and I think he'd be a solid addition to the rotation.  Sure, a more dynamic player would be cool, but his 3pt shot has improved considerably, and he still has a knack for position/boxing out around the hoop.  He can still be that "power 3" that we don't have, especially with KG and BBD spreading the floor with their 18' jumpers.

Half the MLE?  Ooh...not sure now.  It wouldn't be my first choice, but if Outlaw goes elsewhere and Miller insists on more than perhaps 3 years, I'd look to split the MLE, perhaps between Gomes and someone like Warrick or James Singleton.

Strongly disagree (with respect). And I've made the same argument with the many Blazers fans that have Gomes behind Dante Cunningham and Luke Babbitt on the depth chart. I don't see it. Should Portland keep Gomes I expect he'll be the first forward off the bench, either as a "big 3" or "stretch 4."

It's worth noting that he was excellent playing off a ball-dominating Paul Pierce early in his career, thanks to his basketball acumen, great sense of spacing, and nice mid-range game. I expect he'd similarly thrive alongside Roy.

And too much hay is made about his defensive decencies. Sure he has more than his fair share of bad match ups. But he's a solid system defender - strong, committed, makes good rotations, closes out hard, will rebound - who has had to play on young, losing teams his entire career.

FYI, Gomes is more productive (and a better shooter) than Matt Barnes, another hustle-and-muscle guy who is a bit slow for the 3 but short for the 4.

I like Gomes, but the Celtics need to spend that money on either 2/3 that can shoot, or a center.

Pass. Don't pretend he is a 3. Ryan is an undersized 4, and Celtics are solid @ 4 position (KG & Baby)

agreed. for the min I would sign him right away, we need guys to fill out the roster for cheap $ and he would be a great value. For more than that, no way. If he is bought out, I wouldn't be surprised to see him latch on to a good team for the min and try to earn a bigger contract.

Then how do we get a decent center and a true wing to backup Paul and Ray?
