BIll SImmons tweeted the following as part of his Celtics off-season predictions:
4b) Possible candidates for a Sheed deal: Biedrins, Murphy, Chandler, Songalia, even (gulp) Eddy Curry (if NYC throws in an enticement).
At first I was like... Curry? But then I thought about it...
Actually this is kind of genius.
Curry is only signed through this next season at 11.2 mil.
So...
If they could somehow magically make his contract go away... we're talking about the Knicks being able to easily offer 3 max contracts instead of two. How much is that worth to them? Would they dump Gallinari for a chance to sign Bron, Bosh and Johnson flat out?
Boston trades: Rasheed 6.3 mil, Glen Davis, 3.3 mil
Knicks trade: Curry 11.2 million, Gallinari 3.3 mil
Ok... so what happens is Sheed retires and the Knicks instantly free up another 6.3 million for free agents. Then in the middle of the season, Curry's 11.2 million expiring contract becomes another MAJOR asset for the Celtics.
Problem is... I think we need to come up with a few million more in salary for this kind of deal to work. Unless it involves signing-and-trading one of our free agents, the only guy we have who could be included is Perk. Would have to be something like this...
Sheed - 6.3, Perk - 4.4, Baby - 3.3 = 14 mil
for
Curry - 11.2, Gallinari, 3.3, Chandler, 2.1 = 16.6 mil
This works.
If the Knicks throw in future 1st, Boston would have to do this. Mid season you could be swapping Curry for a major player (monta ellis or something). Depending on your stance on Gallinari and Chandler... you might not even need a future Knicks pick.
Why for Boston?: Gallinari and Chandler are legitimate young assets. Young players to add to our future core. Curry's 11.2 mil expiring contract becomes a HUGE asset at the deadline. You could possibly even work in a 3rd team where Boston lands a guy like Ellis or Tyson Chandler immediately from a team looking to pick up an expiring contract right away.
Why for the Knicks? Losing Gallinari and Chandler is a bummer. They pick up one young prospect in Glen Davis and one of the best defensive big men in the game if Perk gets healthy. Financially, Sheed retires and this immediately frees up another 9 million for the Knicks in THIS free agency class. The only players they would have under contract are Perk (1 year), Davis (1 year) and Toney Douglas (1 mil). That's a total commitment of 8.7 million. If there is a plan in place to bring in Bosh, Bron and Johnson... this gets that done.
