He'll be the 10 minute backup and get time here and there.
Pipe dream. Scal has a better chance of being a 10 minute backup than Erden.

Unless Clifford Ray works miracles with him, he will be a 4 mpg guy for blowouts only.

I don't have any pipe dreams when it comes to 10 minute backups.  Sorry.  Its the least of my concerns.

I don't count out any 23 yr old though.  No matter who he is.  Unless his name is Jamarcus Russell.

Is he a legit 7-footer?

I think he's just a tad under the 7 foot range.  However,
I've heard his wingspan is huge.  So with that, yeah, I guess he'd be considered a 7 footer and then some.

He'll be the 10 minute backup and get time here and there.  Still raw, young, and a project.  Just like Perkins was when he came out of high school.

You can't really compare an 18yo and a 23yo as projects--much more malleability with the high schooler.

Both are raw, young, and projects.  One from high school.  The other from Euro ball.  Thats all I'm saying.

How many times have you actually seen him play? You might be right on, but until we see him, I am withholding judgment.

Don't see how you can say that till you actually watch the guy.  Danny had to see something in him that he liked.  On the other hand he saw something in Patrick O'Bryant......
Let's see, Erden was a backup in his Turkish team, barely cracked 20 minutes per game and seems to be unable to finish around the basket. He doesn't block shots, doesn't pass, and seems to lack any sort of NBA-caliber skill. Add the fact that he's never played in an NBA type of game, and I'd be genuinely astounded if he makes it past training camp.

edit: Did I forget to mention that he appears to be a turnover/foul machine (2.3 turnovers and 3.0 fouls in a little over 22 minutes of play last season)?

Hasn't he played well against NBA players on a national level ? Whatchu got on that ?

He looks to be  tall stiff. His numbers in europe over the few years are unimpressive.

If he can make the team and be better than williams I would be happy.

But unless he suddenly doubles his points and rebounding numbers, or is a defensive monster, he isn't going to do much on the celtics.

Another tall body,

I don't no anything about this guy.  Is he big clodding stiff?

Ricky Rubio's #'s were even worse and someone thinks he has elite NBA talent.  Not me but, someone.

Guys, i'm from Europe and have seen Erden more then US fans. He's better then Shelden Williams,i have no problem with Erden be our 5th big.

Thanks for the input.  I've done my best to follow right ups and reports.  It seems as though he played a good part in the champiosnship this year.  Who knows?
All I found indicates he can't shoot, has no footwork, is an average defender, and has the body of a PF but the game of a C. He will be decidedly worse than any vet minimum center that is available in the offseason, and won't play. That's about it.

Erden > Landlord.
He's 6-11, has solid footwork and can finish with either hand.
In World Championchips played Pau Gasol extremly well.
Erden > Landlord.
Erden > regular season Sheed.

C's offense and defense both require alot of movement from the Bigs. They have to pressure the ball, and rotate on D and set picks on offense. He may have better hands than Shelden (not hard) and more size; but probably not the agility. This is why BBD is able to thrive on this team - he has happy feet.

Now, I have not seen him play, but my understanding was he was an excellent athlete for a guy his size.  I don't think quickness is really the problem.  Its just the question of whether he knows how to play basketball.
That's my thinking as well. The clips I've seen show him running and finishing around the basket, guarding a smaller man on the perimeter and making a steal, then finishing in transition on the other end. He looks like he can play, but the question we're going to have to find out is does he really know *how* to play...especially play defense.

Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

  • You know my methods, Watson.
He'd still be a late 2nd rounder this year...
