Are the Celtics not allowed to offer a max contract to Lebron. Is if because they would pay a tax or fine. How does the salary cap work for something like this.  Because if it is only a matter of the luxury tax or penalty , I would do it.

We can't because we are way over the cap. We can only offer MLE and Vet Mins for free agents. Also, we can resign our players for however much we want to pay.

Simmons and Ford are on ESPN doing their mock draft...Simmons says that if PP opts out, Sheed retires, and Ray signs elsewhere, they have a shot, albeit small, at LeBron.  Just repeating what I read on ESPN

I'm not sure if they were factoring in things like cap holds for free agents and draft picks, seems like they were just adding up the contracts of the couple players we'd still have under contract.   Figure that if 'Sheed retires, too, he won't just walk away from $12M but that he and the team will come to some kind of buyout, which would have to have some impact on our theoretical cap space.

Here is the exchange (Basically, they are just trying to keep things interesting, and Ford is messing with Simmons):

I think there's a legitimate chance that Danny could blow this up. Depends on Sheed retiring (please God, please), someone overpaying Ray (no way they'd match) and then PP opting out. If all three of those things happened, suddenly they'd be at $36 million...

Right ... any chance they could lure LeBron or Wade?

I also think PP has more value to one of the free agent suitors than he does to the Celtics. Danny could care less about loyalty - he'd trade anybody. He offered KG for Amare last February. He offered Ray to every team in basketball. He doesn't care. He only wants to win.

I don't think Wade is leaving Miami. Just don't see it. LeBron... I wouldn't rule it out but it seems unrealistic. Would playing with ROndo-Perk-Baby-KG guarantee him a Finals spot? Probably not...

Pucaccia, we cannot offer a max contract because we're over the cap. The NBA operates under a "soft cap", meaning team's can go over but only to sign their own players.

You guys know people at this site said the same stuff when someone would bring up KG to the Celtics. I remember when people said impossible, never happen. It did, so don't be so be so quick to shut down people's thoughts or just don't look at topics like this when someone brings them up. Even if it would take a massive amount of things to happen in order for it to happen. Just remember

 ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!

Sign and trade.

Convince Lebron that he could lead the Celtics to multiple titles with Rondo, Pierce, KG and Perk.

Then Lebron forces Cleveland to sign and trade him to Boston for Ray.

I would give the chance of that happening about at the same level as lightning striking you while you are stranded on the moon.

It's a complicated answer:

First: Yes, we can
Second: We are not going to sign LeBron

We can sign LeBron/Wade etc IF:

Wallace is going to retire
Ray Allen goes away
PP opt out AND sign with another team (Clippers?)

Of course, you can understand by yourself, this is a very unlikely scenario.

Our best scenario? in my opinion: forget LeBron and Wade and try hard to sign Demarcus Cousins. Rondo+Cousins could be a young and solid core at "only" 15 mln

And you should not insult other users. Seriously.

Also, maybe do a tiny bit of research before you post. It's not like the answer isn't explained in detail in a sticky in this forum.
