Let's face it, the Hornets owner George Shinn is cheap. Given a choice between a contender paying the luxury tax and a lottery team under the cap, it's more than likely he would choose taking the lottery team. Given a mid first round pick and a mid 2nd round pick, he would take the 2nd rounder because he can pay them the minimum and not have to pay them guaranteed years on the contract.
They have recently in trades just given guys away rather than get caught in luxury tax land. Well, next year if they renounce all their free agents they can expect to have 11 guys on the team at a total team payroll of $70.5 million. Their first round draft pick will have a salary hold of $1.9 million. That would give the Hornets their minimum 12 players at a payroll of $72.4 million.
That is probably going to mean being in the luxury tax for a team that no one would feel would have a chance at contending. They probably won't even make the playoffs out west.
So let's help them cut some payroll.
Boston Celtics send Rasheed Wallace and Glen Davis.
New Orleans Hornets send David West and pick #11 in 2010 NBA Draft.
New Orleans then would have Rasheed Wallace retire which would free up $5.8 million($500.000 less than his salary as his slot would then be held by a minimum roster slot hold). The Hornets get a young local product that could thrive in a starting role and who could possibly help sell tickets and get under the luxury tax threshold.
The Celtics upgrade their overall talent level while getting a contract that terminates at the same time as KG's. A KG/West starting duo while Perk is out would be a lot better than some of the alternatives they could come up with through signing a free agent with just the MLE.
It also gives the Celtics a pick at 11 and 19 on Thursday. That way the C's could land 2 quality players in this draft as well taking Ed Davis or Ekpe Udoh with the first pick and a SF/wing with the second pick, like Quincy Pondexter or Damion James.
Then with the MLE they are wide open to do whatever they want in getting the best player(s) to fill holes, like Earl Watson or Steve Blake and then give what's left to a big man center like Zydrunas Ilgauskas or Jermaine O'Neal. Then resign Ray, and Tony and add a one or a couple of vet minimum guy(s)(Yakhouba Diawara or James Singleton) or and a 2nd rounder(PG - Jon Scheyer or SF - Marqus Blakely) and the roster looks like:
Rondo/Blake or Ridnour/2nd rounder
Allen/Allen/Mason
Pierce/Pondexter or James/vet minimum
KG/West/Ed Davis or Udoh
Perk/O'Neal or Ilgauskas
Built to contend again yet built to grow youth as well.
