It is a big deal in the whole scheme of things because allowing it and not talking about it would set a precedent for it to keep happening. Sure it was just a plastic water bottle, but, in this case, it's not the object thrown that is the problem; it is the throwing of an object, any object on the floor. And drunkeness is no excuse, even though none of us know whether the person was drunk or not. Unfortunately it made us look like the LA fans that threw things on the floor earlier in the season.

Prosecute the idiot fan and be done with it. It is hard to ban drunken idiots when the arena wants to sell a lot of booze. But for idiots who can't control themselves, you need to press charges so they end up with a fine of a few hundred dollars.

Banning is almost impossible to enforce. Season ticket holders aren't going to do this nonsense because they usually actually like watching the games and remembering what happened.

Boston has a lot of alcoholics. It only takes a single idiot to make it on TV. It is silly to evaluate a fanbase based on so little data.

People are talking ejections and banning from Boston sport sites, etc.. How about criminal prosecution. Let's start with assault, attempted batttery, reckless endangerment...there must be some other crimes committed here.

No, it wasn't a hand grenade, knife, sword or any other implement traditionally used as a weapon hurled from the crowd.
Allegedly, it was a vodka nip or something of that sort. Irrespective of what was thrown, however, fan behavior of this kind cannot be trivialized. It sets a tremendously bad precedent and a slippery slope with potentially escalating behavior. Anything (except insults, verbal barbs, etc) thrown from the crowdat a player or onto the floor cannot be, in the slightest, perceived to be acceptable and should be dealt with with the full force of the law. Implicit in your statement is that should the object in question rise to a certain level, then it's not OK. What is that level? Is a hamburger OK? How about a hot dog? Piece of pizza? Full bottle of beer?

An assault is the intentional act of placing someone in fear of imminent bodily harm. A battery is an intentional non-consensual touching. The latter definitely took place here. The former is likely and both are actionable in both criminal and civil court. If Odom or any athlete did either to that pukey fan, you'd have a civil suit/settlement at a minimum and perhaps criminal prosecution. But for the fan, if it's not a "hand grenade" or something that rises to that level, then it's OK, because he paid his 100 bucks, huh?

For whatever its worth most people that get really drunk, it not happening in the stadium. People are showing up drunk from pregaming and/or sneaking in hard alcohol. Its pretty hard to get smashed in two hours off 8 dollar miller lites.

im very torn on this issue.  overall, i dont like the act and prefer it didnt happen.  i can also say it didnt hit odom bc i was there and saw it hit the floor and slide.  

i dont like it, not bc it is "classless", but bc it could have hit another fan or a celtic.

then there is an evil part in me that likes it bc it adds to the feud/rivalry, makes it feel rowdy, and is reminiscent of the old days.

...and any1 playing devil's advocate, yes it would [pee] me off if someone in LA threw something and hit our players.  hypocritical i know, but im being honest here.

I'll be honest, when I first read the thread title I thought you guys were talking about the technical foul that Rondo got for shoving Odom in the first quarter of last night's game.

As far a a fan throwing something onto the court at a player, that is really low, especially after the 'Malice at the Palace' incident, fans should know better than to provoke the other team by throwing potentially harmful objects at them.

Even though Lakers fans are still notorious for throwing foam fingers onto the Staples Center court as the Cavaliers were blowing them out in the 4th quarter, it doesn't do us any good to stoop to their level, especially in a playoff game.

Speaking of unruly Lakers fans, we won't have to worry about Lakers fans rioting (on the news) if we can win just one more game at Staples Center. For some reason Lakers fans find that the best way to celebrate an NBA championship is by vandalizing their own city and looting department stores.

That, when compared to an awkward  Brian Scalabrine interview that followed our Celtics' Game 6 victory in 2008 seems to prove the fact that our fans are by far the more tame, classy and sensible group of b-ball fanatics, but then again that's just my opinion.

Nope.  Not condoning.  The guy should be booted.  Arrested.  Fined.  Season tickets revoked etc...But the "full penalty of the law" certainly depends on what exactly was thrown.  There's a definite difference between throwing a hot dog, and throwing a glass bottle (I was using a grenade as hyperbole).

If the object thrown can cause bodily harm then it needs to be a harsher penalty than a foam finger or something...UNLESS, and this is a big unless, the person throwing the object was outwardly inciting (and successfully inciting) more objects being thrown on the floor...different can of worms there.
