Call me back on this topic when he's not in foul trouble the first two minutes of the game. The fact he was even able to get 6 assists in Game 2 was incredible.

Game 1 is one thing, but the Lakers are kidding themselves if they think they'll get these calls in Boston, and the fact they couldn't put us away in Game 2 may have just doomed them because of that. I expect a lot of whining by Gasol, and maybe Bryant pulling a Lebron in Game 5 when we celebrate Banner 18.

And, of course....I anticipate KG going off in Boston.

I don't think we have lost the ticket. I thought he was great in the last five minutes making the plays that don't show up in the box score -

For example, that killer screen that enabled Rondo to go in for an uncontested layup.

He had at least two assists to Perkins.

He was busy boxing out the bigs and Rondo got rebounds to complete the triple double.

The Celtics won a vital game last night.

KG adjusts to being a role player and is fine with it.
The beatings will continue until morale improves

KG's problems stem from the foul trouble more than anything else. People arguing that Gasol is simply better than him at this stage are missing one point - KG is getting called for touch fouls while Gasol is not. Either you swallow your whistle on both ends, or you call them both for the same stuff. He simply cannot get in any sort of rhythm because of the fouls. Now, he's doing other things badly (most notably, not grabbing potential rebounds with two hands and instead tapping them somewhere with one), but my guess is a more evenly-called game between him and Gasol would help most of these issues. Pau's still going to get his points, but it'd be nice if the refs allowed KG to make him work for them.

fouls did to him what they did to ray in game one. KG will be fine..but the lakers are doubling him and trying to get him out of the offense. but he had some big assists late and a huge basket. i feel confident knowing he and pierce played so poorly and boston still won

KG was still very effective in bursts. He just needs to stay out of foul trouble and calm himself into a groove.

I don't think we've lost our "Ticket" but I'll put it this way...

If Charlie Bucket opened that candy bar and saw Garnett's face on it, I don't think he would ran home so quickly to tell Grandpa Joe, and nor do I believe Grandpa Joe would have worked so hard on trying to walk again over this news...

Yeah, but that's just because Grampa Joe could stay in bed and still watch basketball on TV. ;)

But seriously ... let's hope the officiating crew gives KG an actual opportunity to play, without getting the "too many fouls" rug pulled out from underneath him. I mean, this is a guy who lives off intensity and the energy of the fans, yet he gets pumped up for the game, comes in, and has to sit down after the first few minutes because of some "ticky-tack" fouls.

How can any of us, (KG included), get a realistic idea of where he's at, when he's not given enough time to even tie his shorts?!? I think he'll get that chance tonight, and if he does, prepare for a "statement" game ... a positive one! (Here's hoping).

Let them play!!

Yep - KG will be fine, tonight.

Looking forward to this game - I really am. LA will be tough, but I really like Boston's Opportunity here.

Play Celtics Ball, and we win this - no matter what LA does.

The big ticket is here on the Boston Celtics team. That's why we get to the finals. Last year we all know what happened. All i can say is that our starting lineup with KG has not lost a series. KG is our leader his presense is important. Sometimes it doesn't matter how much he will score.2008 he was the real MVP in the finals. This year i think he got tired but he is great player you know why? If he can't score he will do a lot of diffrent things that can help you win. In game 2 he had 6 assist and 0 turnovers. I'm just saying KG's stats are not important. It is important to winn 4 and raise the 18th banner and KG is will do whatever it takes to win cause he doesnt want to lose.
So tonight if the others have problem scoring the ball he will step up but if Paul and Ray are scoring he will help them to stay hot and he will do other smaller but not less important things.

I want to stay optimistic about KG.

That being said, if he doesn't perform better tonight in Game 3, I don't know what to say anymore.  Fingers crossed.

Come on Ticket, I know you won't let us down!

We'll have a better idea after tonight.  Gasol punched Garnett in the mouth in game 1 on the glass, and I think it was a (the?) deciding factor of game 1.  In game 2, though, KG came to play before the fouls.  I've gone through the stats of both of the first 2 games when KG and Gasol were each other's main assignments (i.e. when both are in the game, and Odom is out).  The totals from game 2 look like this:

17.15 minutes
Gasol: 4 points (2-for-2 FG), 6 rebounds (2 offensive), 2 assists
Garnett: 4 points (2-for-4 FG), 3 rebounds (0 offensive), 4 assists

Gasol still won the battle of the boards, but it was at least competitive (vs the 8 - 0 rebound shellacking he laid on KG in game 1, including 5 offensive boards).  And KG arguably had the larger offensive impact in game 2 when they were guarding each other, with his passing helping to change the game.  Gasol scored 21 points on 8 shots in the 25 minutes he was out there without KG as his main defensive assignment.  He definitely had a huge game, but unlike game 1 Gasol's big night in game 2 can't be tied to him producing on Garnett.

Also, let's look at how game 2 broke down by quarter:

1st quarter: Garnett had 2 points, 2 assists and a rebound in the first 3:26 before he got called for that 2nd foul 50 feet away from the ball.  Gasol had only a defensive rebound in that period.  All signs were that Garnett was about to ball, then he had to go to the bench.

2nd quarter:
KG seems tentative trying to not get the 3rd foul, but of course he does in only 2:37.  Neither he nor Gasol even attempted a shot before he had to go back to the bench.

3rd quarter: Having played a total of 6 minutes in the first half, Garnett is now completely out of the offensive flow and playing careful on defense to avoid another foul.  He makes it 5:41 before he gets the foul this time, but he misses both shots that he attempts (one of them badly).  Meanwhile, this is Gasol's "aggressive" period against KG, scoring all 4 of his points on 2-for-2 shooting, dishing both his assists and grabbing an offensive board.

4th quarter: By this time KG seemed to say 'forget it' and just went out and played, since he had 2 fouls to burn.  And as many have pointed out, in this quarter he made several big plays on both sides of the ball.  Also of note, during the 5:25 when they guarded each other Gasol was held without a point or assist despite it being the most important period of the game.

Bottom line: it sure looks to me from the start and finish, when Garnett was able to just play without worrying about fouls, that he was playing impact ball and getting the better of his matchup with Gasol.  But that is a vanishingly small period of time with which to make a conclusion, and given Gasol's big game 1 and big-time scoring when KG wasn't on him (as well as his 6 huge blocks) he's more than earned the benefit of the doubt in this match-up right now.

That's why I need to see what happens in the next couple of games before I can really gauge this.  Round 1 went to Gasol (primarily on the glass) with a knock down, while Round 2 could have been a draw in their head-to-head but KG's foul difficulty gave Gasol an easy 10-9 round on the scorecards.  What I need to see now is if Garnett has the counterpunch in him that I expect, or whether Gasol is ready to resume control again.  Looking forward to tonight to start answering that question.

  • You say when......
I agree with the guys who said that Gasol is getting the free ride and KG is getting called way more, and sheed and anyone else that comes near Girl-sol....he had maybe 2 fouls on him before he whacked perk...he is getting very confident and getting an easy ride from the refs on the block that is for sure.....I don't like the guy...but i will say he has a good handle, it surprised me a on that reverse dunk, and he has been hitting his shots well also....time for a gasol-wake-up-call......get a bench player to run into him hard, or just a real shot block follow through...the way howard did....!

Great stuff, Drza ... TP. I agree, and I hope that foul trouble doesn't once again stifle KG, and that we get a chance to make a fair assessment of where his game is and his health. I think we'll all be pleasantly surprised, and hopefully, Gasol will be not-so-pleasantly surprised ... the guy has been taking a lot of heat because of this stuff, and I'm not so sure that it's reality. We'll find out tonight, I hope.
