I know that Health is a Fleeting thing..but how can a Man go from Defensive player of the Year in 07-08 to near fouling out against Gasol? No matter what rank Gasol is.

KG has lost a step, but he hasn't lost This much...even with his loss of natural ability, he is a Smart player..he hasn't gone Dumb on Defense in two games.

Unless there's a hidden injury (and who knows with that stuff - Pierce lied all year about how banged up he was), what's happening isn't that much of a shock.

KG is an older player, whose game was largely based on his athleticism. Because he's older, he'd be in decline anyway. Because there's an injury on top of that, that decline might come faster or with more peaks and valleys.

I think you, like a lot of fans (including me) and KG himself, are still hoping for the return of the player he was. I rewatched the 08 finals last week and one thing you notice is how often KG explodes off the dribble and takes Gasol to the bucket. Those moves are now gone from his arsenal. Same thing on D - he's lost things there.

It's not at all shocking that he might have a bad game or two or even a whole bad series, especially against an elite offensive PF like Gasol. Add in games where the Lakers blow by the C's perimeter D, and the task becomes nearly impossible for KG.

Well, I know he won't be as explosive as he was in 07-08, but I do remember him being 08-ish in the CLE series - he even took Sideshow off the dribble and took it to the rack one time..I had not seen him do that in a long time.

I just don't see how he has lost This Much..I cannot believe it. IMO, it has more to do with the Refs - they have taken him out of his game to elevate Gasol.

Also - KG guarded Dwight Howard for stretches, and didn't pick up fouls as quickly as he is racking them up on Gasol.

Like Bahku mentioned - it is more than likely mental, but to me, Mental issues are affected by outside forces..

They need to get him off without getting into foul trouble.

I don't think they need to get KG off offensively. He's never been a guy who needed to score - I think they just need to hit him in the flow of the O when it makes sense.

Maybe they should break out the zone to steal a game.

He doesn't need 20 pt games but the series will be a lot easier if we can count on 14 and 9 from him.
He looks fine physically to me.  It is very strange watching guys like Nate Robinson display far more composure, decison making, and smart play than a guy like KG.  There is no referee excuse for this.  KG has to step up a notch or two.

Yeah, KG's struggles seem purely mental. Really strange. But he was killing us last night to the point I was mad at Doc for not putting Sheed back in the game instead of KG in money time (plus Sheed was playing really well). Yet KG did come huge in the last minutes with a big bucket and key rebounds so... maybe he will get back on track at home.

But to me it's kind of a good thing to see that we can win without a good KG.

Once again, conspiracy theories -- this one aimed at promoting Pau as the next superstar and targeting Kevin Garnett. Unreal, but I guess these "theories" are entertaining at some level.

Just out of curiosity...

If you're a person that believes KG is physically fine, and that his struggles are primarily mental (in the first two games of the NBA Finals, mind you), would it not stand to reason that he's not that mentally tough?

I think it's very understandable denial. Gasol is a far stronger player than KG right now and that's hard to deal with.

hes outta the game mentally because of the foul trouble. its making him tentative. whenever he touches gasol he gets a foul so of course hes gonna play more reserved on defense. and its clear his defensive energy, pride, carries over into his offensive game so he doesnt have that bounce to his step. he'll have a strong game 3 (unless hes in foul trouble). but also, a lot of credit has to go to gasol. he definitely is not afraid of the celts front line and is not afraid to go against them. hes def a top 3 power forward/center in the league.

Sure, if you hadn't seen him play in 2008.

KG is ahving trouble guarding Gasol on the block and Gasol's length is bothering KG's post game.  Also, when KG tried to muscle Pau at all to keep him off the block he picks up fouls. We have to figure out a way to chip him earlier to disrupt the offense. A film session with Thibbs and I think Gasol will look a little more human in game 3. Also, if KG can just hit outside jumpers ina pick and roll game he will bring Gasol out of his comfort zone a bit and do wonders for the Ticket's confidence.

However, we haven't gone to that much. Look for it in game 3 early to get KG's confidence going.

Reports of KG's demise are premature IMO. He's already shown this playoffs how effective he can be. He will get it together for a big game sooner rather than later.

KG has not been scoring well because of foul trouble, the Laker's length giving him fits, and possible injury issues.

But don't forget he still made some good plays - during that  11-0 run that won us the game, KG:

- had a great assist to Perk on that out-of-bounds play
- set a ridiculous screen where he blocked both Gasol and Kobe and left a wide-open lane for a Rondo layup
- made a tough shot over Artest and Gasol to put us up 3.

KG also had the 2nd most assists on the team (6) in just 24 minutes.  He didn't play like we're used to, but he gave us some positive things out there too.

He was even better than that. On one play late in the game, Kobe took the ball to the basket and KG's outstretched hand forced him into a double clutch missed shot. C's got the rebound. And he won a battle with Pau/Bynum for a rebound.

Honestly, I'm starting to think that as poorly as he played early in the game, his last five minutes was elite level on both sides of the ball.

Gasol is the future, and to them, KG is almost "over-the-hill". I'm not saying this is actually what's going on, but there's certainly enough to make you seriously consider it.
Well, FWIW, Gasol will be 30 in a month, so he's not exactly young, either.  :-\

this is a  good point.

my guess is that Garnett -- like lots of players have before him -- is struggling (yes mentally) with his newfound physical limitations. If i had to guess i'd say he's worried about getting injured again too since it took so long to get back to a point where he's contributing at something like KG levels (i.e. pre-Finals)

He's still so talented (passing, outside shot, etc) that i'm wondering if he can make the transition (next year) to having an impact less with sheer hustle and athleticism and more on spacing, guile, etc.

I can't really think of examples of guys who've made that transition. I guess Sheed is a little bit, or Arvydas Sabonis, but by the time he got to the NBA the transition was completed.
