What is the difference between a great scorer and shooter its the difference between Kobe and Ray...on offense. (Kobe can kill you in a variety of ways, and he needs all of them (driving, getting to the foul line shooting) to be effective. Ray though he can do all of those things at this point in his career his bread and butter is shooting and if he gets that going he can kill you that way without getting the foul calls or the drives that is the difference.

I don't think people understand how good of a shooter Ray is.
I perused the comments on the laker blog and they were like Ray can't shoot like that all the time, and a lot of comments suggesting this were some kind of fluke, and Kobe could do that too if he got hot...no not so much. Kobe is a great athlete and overall scorer (he has this over Ray) but Ray is an amazing shooter while Kobe can shoot and there's a difference.  Fact is most of these shots he hits he's not wide open and if he were wide open yes he could hit like this, uncontested threes are [dang] near free throws for him.  Great example at the end of the game when Rondo got fouled as he passed it back to Ray. Ray let the jumper fly anyway (nobody tried to stop it because obviously the play was dead) and he hit all net and he was well beyond 30 feet out probably half way between the three line and half court. The best thing you can do with Ray is to not let him get going because if he gets going that can happen its never a fluke when it does.

You know, I'd say the opposite:  Most fans I know understand that Ray is a great shooter, but not as many recognize him for being a great all-around player who can drive to the hoop and has a great mid-range game.

For sure, though, Ray is an amazing shooter.  (Don't sell Kobe short in that category, though; when he's hot, he can shoot from outside almost as well as Ray.)

I too think Ray's all around game is extremely under rated in most cities in the NBA except Milwaukee, Boston and Seattle. Unless you watch him every night, you can't appreciate how good an all around player he is. His defense on Kobe was excellent and he can still take it to the hole. In his younger days, Ray's near perfect shooting form always took away from just how good he was as a driver and finisher and his ball handling is still near point guard level.

Funny thinking back to the Pick Two Draft I got killed for having Ray and Grant Hill as starters. The old dudes can still play. And as much as I have cautioned that SG's that hit Ray's age decline fast, Ray will probably end up being mentioned in the same breath as Michael Jordan and Reggie Miller as the only SG's in NBA history that stayed deadly as shooters deep into their thirties.

Gotta re-sign Ray.

Ray's shot is butter from all over. But a great scorer goes to the hole and gets two on that 2:1 with only Kobe and his five fouls playing D.

Pierce is a great scorer, Ray is a great shooter. But Pierce is a very good shooter, and Ray is a very good scorer. If those two had played together their whole careers... :)

TP. Scary thought. Ray and Paul together their whole careers. Yikes.

If you can't get open as a great shooter your are less effective than compared to a great scorer.

Scorers depend less on people setting screens for them or a nice pass from a teammate.

Shooters don't need to rely on the whistle as much as scorers do.

Ray Allen can shoot and score.

TP couldn't have said it better myself..and I didn't herego the TP!  My point was that might've gotten lost, those 8 3's was no fluke and being a great scorer doesn't necessarily mean any player can do what Ray does when he's shooting like that.... (meaning if Kobe had 10 wide open threes he doesn't necessarily hit 8 out of 10 and he's a very good shooter)AND shooting like that is not easy but Ray is such a good shooter he makes it look easy and its a lot of work (by his teammates to get him reasonably effort) and skill on his part to make those shots.

I agree.

The Celtics offense limits what we see from Ray and, fortunately, limits his dribbling.

I think Kobe is actually a better shooter than Ray from extremely deep, like 4 feet behind the line. Ray has that ridiculously sweet release off of the catch that Kobe doesn't have, but Kobe can rain 3's off the dribble and leaping high.

  • No contaban con mi astucia !!!
Ive never posted this before
Early during 90s i watched a lot of games ( all that available)
and ESPN and follow the league the better I can before direct tv hits my life.
I remember early paul days and how amazed i was about him, the kobe first era and all that crap, but I remember there was a kid on Seattle that shoot the light off, and was soooo smoth every time I watched him I wish we had him, after that I also realiza he had a greatcouple of defenseive games against our beloved kobe and I wanted more.
Granted that I was sooooo worried about those knees when we got him ( see Wallys) but now As it was supposed to be I am absolutely ecstatic to have a sure hall of famer in this team.

I am NOT living the hype, I never critiziced Ray before and never will, hes what he is, and thats soo good it hurts.
