Quote
Last series, Phil Jackson called his big men "thin-chested" as a way of goading them into standing strong and taking a hit, and the team has been offering financial incentive -- $50 per charge.

What a bunch of wimps!

Having to pay them extra to play defense.

As far as I can tell this is actually within the rules.  The money paid comes from a coffer, into which the players pay for miscellaneous misdeeds.

None the less, it is still rather pathetic the Lakers need to provide monetary rewards for showing the grit to play defense.  Sad!

I wouldn't want to take a charge from Big Baby or Perk for $50.  Sounds kinda cheap for a finals series... :)

I wonder if the person determining the payout differentiates between taking a charge and flopping for a charge? Hmmmmmmm.

This must be within the rules -- some sort of "petty cash" thing -- but I still like to think of it as the Lakers cheating by paying illegal bonuses. ;)

Didn't the NBA put a low limit on "gifts" from owners to players as a response to Mark Cuban constantly buying his players expensive presents? Something like $200 per year?

Edit: I just read the article. It's the players own money re-distributed. They put money in for each illegal defense and money goes out for those who take charges. Fun idea.

And really, the fact that the Lakers don't take charges unless they're paid tells you all that you need to know.

We don't need to pay BBD when he takes charges.  (We just give him cheeseburgers. ;))

I'm looking foward to Ray blowing by him again after he fakes some hustle.

That should be a $50,000 fine or something.

50 bucks to an NBA player is like 5 cents to the rest of us.

I think the league can look the other way in this case.

But it wouldn't be as fun right.
