Let's get ahead of ourselves a little bit and, whatever the results are for the Celtics in the playoffs, discuss Marquis' future with the team and potentially in the NBA.
I think it's a really intriguing situation because he accepted a discount to come and play for the Celtics. He said he received better offers but chose the Celtics ; numerous coaches around the league called Doc to tell him how lucky he was to get him at such a low price.
Anyway, we all know how Marquis' supposed big role with the 2nd unit turned out. He was really efficient when healthy but then he got hurt, came back, and never found his rythm back so he got in Doc's doghouse and he is still there (he played in an emergency situation in game 5 but then got a concussion).
So, I guess his idea was to win a championship this season and play a big role with the team in order to get a good contract this summer. Obviously we don't know about the championship part yet but it looks like he's not going to contribute anyway for the C's in these playoffs, so his dreams of a "James Posey like contract offer" situation are pretty much dead, I guess.
Do you think there is a good chance he re-signs for one year (or multiple years) with the Celtics with the guarantee of more minutes/a bigger role? Would you re-sign him? And do you think his value has dropped off considerably since he was hurt for most of the year, then didn't produce (and he basically was useless in the playoffs since he wasn't part of the roation), and then got hurt again?
I thought about it this morning and I think it's a really intriguing scenario because I don't think a team is willing to offer him big bucks this summer. On the other hand, he still has his very good basketball IQ and various skills.
I would like to see him stay with the Celtics. I know he has injury concerns, obviously we witness it this year, but I really like his game and we need to have some depth at the wing/guard position.
