Let's get ahead of ourselves a little bit and, whatever the results are for the Celtics in the playoffs, discuss Marquis' future with the team and potentially in the NBA.

I think it's a really intriguing situation because he accepted a discount to come and play for the Celtics. He said he received better offers but chose the Celtics ; numerous coaches around the league called Doc to tell him how lucky he was to get him at such a low price.

Anyway, we all know how Marquis' supposed big role with the 2nd unit turned out. He was really efficient when healthy but then he got hurt, came back, and never found his rythm back so he got in Doc's doghouse and he is still there (he played in an emergency situation in game 5 but then got a concussion).

So, I guess his idea was to win a championship this season and play a big role with the team in order to get a good contract this summer. Obviously we don't know about the championship part yet but it looks like he's not going to contribute anyway for the C's in these playoffs, so his dreams of a "James Posey like contract offer" situation are pretty much dead, I guess.

Do you think there is a good chance he re-signs for one year (or multiple years) with the Celtics with the guarantee of more minutes/a bigger role? Would you re-sign him? And do you think his value has dropped off considerably since he was hurt for most of the year, then didn't produce (and he basically was useless in the playoffs since he wasn't part of the roation), and then got hurt again?

I thought about it this morning and I think it's a really intriguing scenario because I don't think a team is willing to offer him big bucks this summer. On the other hand, he still has his very good basketball IQ and various skills.

I would like to see him stay with the Celtics. I know he has injury concerns, obviously we witness it this year, but I really like his game and we need to have some depth at the wing/guard position.

I'd take him if his salary demands are very low.  Between TA and Marquis, I'd rather sign TA.  Daniels has skill, but he doesn't seem like the greatest competitor.

I don't think he comes back.  Someone will again give him a bigger offer.  And the way his playtime went, I can see him choosing to go somewhere else.

I think the only thing Marquis Daniels proved this year is that he is a fragile, injury prone player who should be avoided at all costs because he more than likely is only going to give you a half season or less of basketball and even then there's the question of whether that half season is going to be high quality play.

He's not coming back.

  • Doc could learn a thing or two from Norman Dale
I think he'll choose to go elsewhere, even if the salary offers are similar.  Things just didn't work out for him here, and I'm sure he wants a fresh start.

Sometimes situations just don't work out and player and team just don't match up for whatever reason.  Boston has not been the place for Marquis, but he'll find a good home somewhere.

I think he's a backup option, if the prices/contract years gets too pricey for guys like Mike Miller and Outlaw.  Not a priority, but I don't think they're adverse to bringing him back.

At the time, it looked like we got him at a pretty good discount, but it's hard to see with his mediocre play the second half of the season how he's going to get a new contract offer for very much more.  I don't see him getting many offers much about the LLE.  I could see Danny bringing him back at something like 1 year/$2.5M if other options don't prove fruitful.

I'd be very surprised if he is back, but I think he is basically like what Tony Allen was in 2008, when they were looking to sign Posey.  They only signed Tony, after Posey was gone.  In this case, I think they will only sign Daniels, if they can't afford to keep Tony.  I think they need to keep one of them, in order to take advantage of the Bird rights, or non-Bird rights, but it will come down to how much money Tony gets on the open market.

A team that is paying the luxury tax often looks for ways to cut costs any way they can.  Daniels isn't playing anyways, so the C's can find a much cheaper 12th man out there somewhere.  Fox example, Gaffney or Lafayette could play for the minimum, and if it's 500k less than Daniels, that's a million in savings w/ the luxury tax.  For a 12th man who isn't playing, I imagine the C's would rather take the discount.

Great point but the savings are even more extensive. A second rounder or NBDL player taking his place has a minimum salary around $500K. Given Daniels will probably seek a minimum of $2 million per year with luxury tax calculated that's a $3 million savings. In what could very well be a transition year, those type of savings up an down the roster could add up to a bunch of cash.

He's gone. I don't want him. He's not tough.
Celtics should put the money into Nate who is 10x the athlete Marquis will ever be and just sign a prospect.
