Kobe and Wade are clearly better.  Joe Johnson is better, and so is Brandon Roy.

After that, there's a huge group of guys who are arguable.  Monta Ellis, Stephen Jackson, O.J. Mayo, Andre Iguodala, Vince Carter, Manu Ginobili, Jason Richardson, Jason Terry, Kevin Martin.

From that group, I'd take Ray over any of them, I think, especially for this team.

Well, Wade and Kobe are clearly better, as is Joe Johnson and Brandon Roy.  But after that, I think its hard to make too strong a case for anyone being significantly better than Ray.  Ginobili is probably the only one that I think I would personally put above him, but with his injuries, I think Ray has a good argument against him.

I would just say Wade and Kobe.

If Ray was a #1 option he would be just as good as Roy or Joe.

There are plenty of SG's who are technically better/younger than Ray, but when you actually look at the list I don't think there is one I'd prefer more than Ray for this team.

What can I say, I'm biased because I love Ray Allen.

If we're speaking strictly in terms of player worth, I'd pick just about everybody on that list except for Carter, Mayo, Smith, and Salmons.

Kevin Martin is iffy, but that's only because he's injured a lot.  Assuming perfect health, I'd take K-Mart over Ray.

However, I think Ray is a better fit for this team than most of those players; right now the only players I'd take over Ray are Kobe, Wade, and Roy.

BTW, I would absolutely love for the C's to try to lure Ginobli away from the Spurs.  He'd be an awesome pick up for us and he doesn't seem to be getting the slightest bit of attention tucked neatly behind all these other big stars that are looking for max deals.

Manu just signed a 3 year extension with San Antonio.

I don't think it has to do with "worth", I took the question as being who is the better player right now.  And if that is the question, I have Ray in the top 5.

That's what I meant by "worth."  Who is a better player in terms of current talent, independent of a specific team or system.  There are more than a few starting SGs in the NBA who rank ahead of Ray in that category, but aside from the bona fide superstars (Wade, Kobe, Roy), I don't think there are any that I'd rather have on the Celtics right now.

Ray fits somewhere after Manu and before JRich (behind kobe, wade, and roy).  The JRich comparison is very close though.  Not bad for a 35 year old.

Ah, I thought you were taking into account things like age/contract/etc.

Anyways, I disagree that really any of those guys (other than Wade, Kobe, Roy, Johnson, and possibly Ginobili)are better than Ray right now.  But at the very least, I think it is debatable, and that is not bad at all, considering so many of us wanted to give him away as an expiring contract a few months ago.

Did you really just list John Salmons as a shooting guard that might be seen as better than Ray Allen?

Ray's insulted by this, trust me.

Spot on analysis, but I disagree on your conclusion. I would take OJ Mayo over Ray whether for a single season or over the next few years.

They are similar in a lot of ways on offense: 3rd or 4th option, snipers, good passers, similar efficiency.

On the defensive end, I think Mayo seperates himself.
