i used to roll my eyes at posters on this forum who would suggest a league conspiracy surrounding the officiating in the playoffs.
i don't roll my eyes anymore.
now, i don't believe that Stern literally calls the officials in their dressing room before the game to tell them who he wants the winner to be, WWE style. however, i do see playoff games being adversely affected by officiating and it often seems to go in the direction of helping teams that you know the league would profit from winning - either in extending a series or advancing that team to an attractive TV-ratings matchup in the next round.
tuesday nite's Celts-Magic game certainly qualifies for the former and may, according to David Stern's whims, fall into the latter category.
check out this item from some espn notes on last nite's game - i knew that 4th quarter seemed extra tough to win .......
" The Magic were down eight at home, and staring doom in the face, when Mickael Pietrus was called for the first foul of the fourth quarter, just 12 seconds in. They went down 11 on the next play, a Rasheed Wallace 3. The referees played no small part in what happened next, which is that Orlando fought back into the game.
After the Pietrus foul, the next time the referees whistled anything against the Magic was the Redick charge against Glen Davis, with a little more than two minutes left. For nine-and-a-half minutes of playoff, fourth quarter basketball, not one whistle went Boston's way. In that same stretch, Tony Allen, Wallace, Perkins (twice), Pierce (twice), Ray Allen, and Garnett were all assigned fouls, while Rajon Rondo was called for traveling.
And as I mentioned, by the time it was all done, it was a one-point game."
