trading perkins is like championship sucide. he is our kryptonite to defeat the 2 who claim to be superman; dwight and shaq
You know what is even bigger championship suicide? Not having enough elite talent. And that is going to be the case with the C's soon. Sure, there is a decent chance they could make another run next year, but that is far from a certainty (they got VERY lucky with health this postseason), but their talent base is going to be fading fast over the next few years. If you can get a guy who you think can be a star in exchange for a roleplayer like Perk, you need to do it.
But that player isn't the #4 pick, is it? Outside of Wall, what player is a lock to be star in the league?
I agree that we're going to need to reload soon. But I see no reason why buying a mid-to-late 1st rounder, along with our own #19 selection, won't be just as good a move.
No one is a lock to be a star in the league. The question needs to be whether the chances of the player you pick at #4 has a better chance to be a star, than Perk has of being the difference between a championship next year or not.
Personally, I think Perk is overrated, and could be replaced by a guy like Haywood, and the team could be just as good, or possibly even be better, because of the huge upgrade offensively overshadowing the defensive downgrade. And at this point, there is nothing that can convince me otherwise.
To me, Perk gives you an advantage over 1 player in the league (who, by the way, played pretty well last night even with Perk in there), but he struggles against a bunch of other players. I think a scenario of Bogut averaging 25 per game against the C's early in the playoffs next season, and bouncing them early is just as likely as Perk keeping Howard in check, and getting the C's past the Magic.
And of course, it depends on what you think of the guys who could be available at 4. If its Derrick Favors, then I absolutely think its worth it.
