The current playoff defense reminds me of the Patriots 2000-2001 defense where they would give up yards here and there and some FG's, but never really break and allow those TD's.

True, our offense in late game situations can be handled a lot better, but our defense has been pretty spot on for most of the 48 minutes of each game.

Kenny Smith was talking on Inside the NBA Monday night & he mentioned the C's defensive philosophy for defending the Magic in Game 1: "We were going to shut down the perimeter 3's & shut down the inside game".

Well we did that in Game 1.

In Game 2, Howard blew up for 30 points & made a lot of FT's too. The Magic also shot 39% from 3 point land.

But a key stat for the Magic's 3's are the attempts.

Doc Rivers was talking about the 3PT FGA to his team in Game 1, about how we had limited the Magic to 2 attempts from the arc in the 1st Quarter, but started giving them more looks in Q2 & Q3.

The Magic attempted LESS 3 pointers in Game 2, only 18 attempts.

The Magic regular attempt about 30 per game from the arc. (Actually 27 or 28 attempts).

I've concluded that I don't see how we can lose a game in this series if we continue to play as hard as we have been these last 2 games.

Only way for us to lose if we change our game plan on the defensive end and start to double Howard. That would increase the frequency of 3 point opportunities for the Magic.

I mean, can you accept winning when Howard goes for 30 and their team still shoots 39% from the 3 point arc?

I can. We just have to keep limiting their opportunities.

Keep doing what we're doing and we can win even bigger, on both sides of the ball.

Good post we are making them work harrrd for every single point on Defense, it rivals that of the '08 season.

Our Defensive rating for 2008 Finals team: 102.26
Our Defensive rating this playoffs: 100

A lower number is better. This doesn't have game 2 taken into account, but I still think it's awesome. Just elite defense.

The Celtics look awesome.  No team is playing better right now, including the Lakers.

If the Celtics make it to the Finals (and it looks very good right now), they'll have fought their way through a very difficult lineup, including the two best teams in the league (during the regular season).  The Lakers haven't had to deal with anything like that.

The Celtics just seem like ever since Game 3 against Cleveland they've been on a mission and they are ready to defeat anybody who dares to challenge them.
Never forget the Champs of '08, or the gutsy warriors of '10.

It's suffocating the Magic. Very physical- hacking Howard, no layups, and willing to foul out and just keep the pressure on.

And I haven't seen any of the C's big men get faked out, then wrap his arm around the head of a Magic player and throw him to the floor, if you know the play I'm referring to. Must be the Patrick Ewing influence.

We sent the Magic to the line almost 40 times, Howard drops 30 & the Magic team shot 39% from the 3 point arc, they didn't turn the ball over 20 times....and they only managed 92 points???

to put things into perspective though
miami a one player team
cleveland a one player team
orlando a giant inside that if we can control hurts the "brilliant" 3 pt shooting system

I think we have done a great job on defense but it will really matter against the lakers who have more than just kobe.

The defense is amazing. Keep it up green! Keep those 3 ballers honest. I don't mind the occassional bursts from Howard, Carter and Nelson. Those 3 aren't good enough to score at a high enough level to warrant excessive double teams from this Celtic team.

I'm really curious to see how LA reacts to this physical style play (even from Orlando if they manage to pull a miracle).

Come on, don't undersell our defense by saying the other teams were lacking. Miami is a one player team, Cleveland had the best regular season record in the league, they were more than just Lebron. Orlando also was one of the better teams in the league.
We are playing great defense in order to stop great teams.

yeah but doc needs to pull perk out of the game whenever superman is sitting.  no one guards howard like perk.  we can't risk for him to get stupid fouls when howard is not in there.  Sheed or baby should be in there when howard is sitting.  The only reason howard went for 30 and had that big grin on his face was because perkules had fouled out.

i think we got orlando's best shot last night. i dont see howard going off for 30 plus in boston. and honestly...we haven't seen the best boston has to offer yet...we haven't had a game where ray, paul and rondo are all on. ray allen scores only 4 points and boston wins?? no way ray is that poor saturday night.

learn from the egg laid vs the cavs in game 3. come out on a mission and finish the magic.

I'm not trust me, our defense to me has another gear as every game/week kg looks more mobile.  But the real test of our defense is going to be against a good TEAM.  Do I think our defense can handle the lakers, yep.  KG should be able to take care of gasol.  Ray has always done a very good job on kobe (since I think he hates him) but we also have pp and tony allen to throw at him.  Our defense is what might just bring us another banner.  I'm not underselling it, I honestly don't feel miami, orlando or cleveland in that order are as good as us or lakers.

Quick, make a list of the top 4 players in the league.  Now cross reference that list with the teams we've faced thus far in the playoffs.

Nuff said.

Kobe's next!

I was actually thinking about that the other day.  Should we make it all the way and beat the Lakers we will have faced 4/5ths of the All NBA First Team.
Yup

The Lakers offense lacks versatility. It relies on post ups + isolations for Kobe.

If you have a strong post defense (check) and are able to defend high scoring wing players (check) then you can shut their offense down. Turn them into a below average offensive team.

Boston can and will do that to the Lakers when they play them in the Finals.
