I think the comparison can be made - two guys who at times seem to not give it their all or be disinterested come alive in crucial moments... After the game I was talking with a friend and said, Sheed's 3 in the corner is worth the 15 million he's getting, and the JD Drew grand slam came right up, and I think it was a valid comparison....thoughts?

No way is that one three-pointer worth Sheed's salary ... that's an over-statement of the most absurd kind. Sheed's got a long way to go to equal the impact of Drew, IMHO.

I hate JD Drew. But his impassive manner has little to do with the effort he's putting in. Whereas we all know Sheed blew off the first 82 games of the season.

Kind of the opposite in a way. Fans hate J.D. because he doesn't seem great at anything, yet most stats point to his overall impact on the game being subtly quite valuable. 'Sheed, on the other hand, had the big rep, but most markers of contribution indicate he's been underperforming his rep for a few years.

JD is a bust, but different than Sheed. JD seems to have a low-tolerance for pain and is often MIA due to injuries or illness.

I'm just sick of seeing posts like this about Drew, and I agree with Fan from VT. They're pretty much exact opposites. Sheed's got a loud mouth and always shows tons of emotion, but has played horribly all year long. JD is quiet and goes out of his way not to show up umpires even when he disagrees with calls, but always gives it his all and has produced to the point that he is statistically worth the hefty salary the Sox are paying him. If you actually watch instead of taking WEEI's word for it, he runs EVERY ground ball out and and is great in the field. On top of that, JD also happens to thrive in clutch situations.

Statistically his UZR and his OPS have been near the top of league at his position since he's been in Boston. All visual evidence indicates that he tries hard. He doesn't show much emotion but all his teammates seem to like him, and he never seems detached from the game.

In '08 injuries plagued him a bit but in '07 and '09 JD played a standard number of games. There's a huge gap between what fans think they know about JD's value and what they actually know. With Sheed, everyone knows he's a bum at this point.

I don't know...baseball seems like a pretty easy sport in which to do acceptably well even if you're disinterested.

No offense but you couldn't be more wrong about that.  Especially regarding a sport where if you succeed 3 out of 10 times you are good.

Agreed, though itf he keeps this level of effort up for us off the bench throughout the playoffs, i could really care less about him going through the motions during the regular season.

Right now he's playing like the Sheed we were all sold on.

My point is you can basically pay attention mostly when you're up at bat and kinda zone out the rest of the time...Ken Griffey Jr. was recently caught napping in the clubhouse during a game.

Nah. This isn't true either. In the field, you have to pay attention all of the time, be aware of how guys are being pitched, position yourself differently. And even when your team is at bat, you're paying attention to the pitcher, how he's throwing, what he's throwing, comparing notes with other players, etc. Doesn't mean you can't zone out a bit, but guys on the pine in basketball can do the same thing.

JD Drew is a great player- IF you go by strictly by stats.  A ridiculously overpaid and overrated player.

You'd have to pay me to watch a team of nine JD Drews.
BORING, and seemingly bored.

At least Sheed has a pulse.

J.D. Drew might be hated, but he helps the Red Sox win during the entire baseball season, regular and postseason.

Rasheed hasn't done that at all during the regular season.

I don't see them as similar except in that both are disliked immensely; One with justification, and one without.

I gave you a TP even though I said that before the playoffs...
