I think that for Billups, I chose the 07-08 season due to his 3 pt efficiency..I see the concern about him losing a step in 07-08, though. I think that he was still a top line defender in 07-08.

I think that this played into my choices for Gerald Wallace as well..on top of him being a solid defender, I wanted a good yr from 3 range, as well as his other stats. It was very important for me to spread the floor for Dream and McHale to operate.

2010 was by far Wallace's best year from three, though, right?  37.1%, versus 32.1% in 2008.  He was also a lot better shooting overall.

It's actually the same thing with Billups:  he was a better 3PT shooting in 2006 than in 2008 (43.3% vs. 40.1%)

I went with the 07-08 for Billups because he had the overall better FG% (45%) He still shot over 40% (40.1) from 3-land and had one of his best ever FT % (913) that yr as well.

For Gerald Wallace, I initially went with 07-08 due to him averaging 3.5 assists from the SF spot. While not as good rebounding for this particular yr, he still pulled in 6.0 rebs, which works out well for us.

I see what you mean now with Wallace. The assessment of his defensive skills from 2009-10 were more than likely his best, with Larry Brown as his coach.

Good Call..I think the reason that I initially went with 07-08 for Gerald Wallace was due to his assists total that yr.

Strategy

Having Magic Johnson fall to me at #10 in the first round set me in the direction that I decided to go.  From there, I decided that I'd try and build a team around athleticism and size.  I watched some of my fellow owners construct some incredible front-courts and decided that I needed to draft guys with size that could provide toughness in defending them.  I chose to take a young Patrick Ewing that was a an incredible defensivice force rather than the more refined offensive player we saw in the mid-90s.  I assumed I'd be able to compensate offesnisivley with my backcourt and wings.

I feel like this team can excel offensively in either the half-court set or playing up-tempo.  I have arguabley the greatest PG ever to run the fast break as well as 2 athletic players in 'Nique and Kemp that can run and finish with authority.  Quite the dangerous trio in the open court.

I think I have a very strong bench that can come in at any time with very little drop-off.  Ginobili is one of the greatest 6th men of the past 20 years and Dale Davis brings his huge physical frame and toughness to counter some of these incredible front-courts.  Raojn Rondo offers the ultimate change up in PGs in contrast to Magic.  Its like throwing a knuckleballer out there after facing a flamethrower all day.  As we've seen this season and playoffs, Rondo has clearly emerged as a Top 5 PG and I couldn't think of a much better backup to Magic.  Amazingly, I actually get bigger when I sub Sabonis' 7 foot 3 frame in there for Ewing.  Sabonis is one of the all-time great passing big men and can hit the outside shot that will draw some of these opposing big men out of the paint, thus allowing my wings to make their way to the basket.

I think a coach like Chuck Daly is perfect for this team.  The man was a master of managing egos and the Original Dream Team was the ultimate collection of stars and you couldn't have asked for a more perfect job.  I don't think chemistry will be an issue on this team.  I have drafted a bunch of key role players from championship teams that know their roles and may be used just for situational circumstances.  I have no doubt they'll accept those roles.

I think Fan from VT should change Carmelo Anthony to 08/09 or 09/10.

Carmelo Anthony was only beginning to realize he needed to put more effort in defensively back in 2008. The start of his improvement defensively happened towards the end of that season but he was still pretty bad defensively at that point. Became a solid defender the following season (08/09).

I thought Camby's best defensive work was done in New York in Jeff Van Gundy. He developed a lot of bad habits while in Denver and didn't deserve the media recognition that he received. I would have picked one of those years (1999-2001).

For Rashard Lewis, I would either pick his final season in Seattle (2007) or his second season in Orlando (2009). He made real progress defensively over his final two years with the Sonics (particularly under Bob Hill in 2007) and became an average defensive player for the first time in his career over that period. In Orlando, he blossomed into an above defensive player (as a PF only) but wasn't used as scorer as well as he was back in Seattle hence the lower scoring numbers (coaching/system/teammates rather than talent).

I would also pick the Chris Kaman from a couple of years ago (2008) when he was rebounding and blocking shots like a fiend. That player had more of an impact than the better scoring version we saw this past season.

I'm not a believer in any of that growth from Kobe Bryant as a better teammate + leader + passer. I do, however, think that he had started to slip athletically by this point in his career ... which is something I would be trying to avoid.

If Ron Harper (big PG defense) and Steve Smith (stand still shooter) are going to be situational subs at the end of your bench, I can understand going with those years. I would still pick their better years because I think they have more value (particularly Ron Harper) but I can understand wanting a specialist instead.

I thought Van Exel's best seasons where with the Lakers early on in his career. In Denver, he was just playing on a worse team and saw more of the basketball.

Which Kobe would you take? Would you take the 1997/98 Van Exel?

WIth Harper and Smith, I'm looking at them as situational subs for those exact jobs. Which other seasons would you consider?

Kobe Bryant = 2003, 2005 or 2006 ... maybe 2007 but that was the season when he started slipping (physically). The final title year or right after Shaq left.

Ron Harper = the younger the better, probably 89/90. The Clipper years.

Van Exel = any year between 1995 and 1997 ... he was very good for most of 1997/98, the start of 97/98, but struggled post All-Star break and was dropped in favour of Derek Fisher. Had some problems with his coach and accepting a reduced role. That late season meltdown hurt the Lakers chances in the playoffs.

I don't know whether to give those problems much consideration or not when selecting the year (actual talent versus exact performance?) but I would put an asterisk beside it for now. Van Exel was superb for those Showtime II teams in 1995 and 1996, they would probably be the years I would lean towards..

Steve Smith = I couldn't decide between young Steve Smith with the Heat (wider skill-set) or one of the following seasons with the Hawks (stuck to his best strengths better but became a bit one-dimensional as a scorer). So either his second or third season with the Heat, or, 1996/97 or 1997/98 with the Hawks. Probably Miami Steve Smith.
