The way to build around Rondo is to find a second superstar. That's the flaw with the original proposal: it shuffles the cards between now and 2012 but doesn't address that major issue. If we're dealing Perk and a draft pick, it should be in a roll of the dice towards getting a star.

Agreed. This deal is Pitino-esque in the way it reshuffles the cards while accomplishing very little.

I am OK with moving Perkins, but I suspect it can be done much more simply - perhaps involving the first rounder - once we identify a potential bridge star to the future who could be moved, such as Beasley or Boozer.
Coined the CelticsBlog term, "Euromistake."

I have been called a lot of things over the years, on this board and in person, but Pitino-esque is a new low for me!

The Celtics will have these guys for the next 3 years:

Rajon Rondo
Ray Allen
Kevin Garnett
Rasheed Wallace
Kendrick Perkins
Glen Davis
Tony Allen
SUPERSTAR PLAYER (formerly Paul Pierce)

There will be a drop in payroll as the big 3 re-sign to smaller deals, allowing the team to add free agents before using the Bird rule to re-sign the big 3.
I have not heard anyone else talk about the chance Boston will have in free agency this off season. Before the Celtics re sign Ray Allen, they will have the opportunity to use both Ray Ray and PP's salaries to sign a max player whose contract would be contingent on the Celts trading Pierce for a draft pick. Pierce is traded for a pick, the signing becomes oficial and then you use the Larry Bird rule to sign Ray. So who is Danny quietly targeting?
Wade?
Bosh?
Dirk?
Labron?
Boozer?
I think there is a good chance We can offer Labron a championship and the keys to the fabled Celtics future.
I expect Labron or Dirk...maybe Pierce is included in a sign and trade.
Looking forward to the next three years.

Terrible trade.

The Celtics get softer on defense.

The Celtics overspend way to much for a backup PF.

And Ray is better the Smith.

Terrible? Really?

The Celtics get softer on defense? Ray Allen is a middling defender, and Rasheed Wallace stinks. Davis is a non-factor on that side of the floor. Only Perkins hurts. Afflalo is developing a reputation as a stopper, and Martin has always been good on that end - including against quicker 4's like Jamison and Lewis. Smith is a sieve, but Nene is a brick wall and amongst the leaders at his position in steals every season.

The Celtics overspend on a backup power forward? Martin is an expiring contract. He also rebounds and defends. His $15 million seems like better value than Wallace's $13.

And Ray is better the Smith. You are probably right, but for how long? Ray is 35 next season, and there is no garauntee we keep him anyway.

You also didn't mention Afflalo at all, a perfect fit for this team.

Who defends Howard?

Perk to Nene is a huge step back.  Is the loss of defense really worth getting the 4th and 5th option on offense?  (Pierce, KG, and Rondo)  Is Nene going to get the touches to be the player he is in Denver?

Plus, both he and Martin have big injury histories.
