This should be required watching for anyone who makes the "russell couldn't be a star in the modern era" argument

What a beast, he destroys anyone who even attempts to take the ball to the paint in this vid, including Oscar.

Wow, Russell was merciless. He absolutely owned the paint in that game.

Thanks for posting this.  TP.

People who think Bill could not compete on level with today's players, don't know anything about Russell, or about the impact he had on the game, and are just out of touch with reality. The guy would have dominated any era he could have been playing in ... period.

It's a shame that the city of Cincinnati doesn't lay claim to a professional basketball franchise anymore seeing as our other two sports franchises have been quite mediocre for the past decade or so. The former Cincinnati Royals (originally the Rochester Royals) have since relocated to Kansas City and then to Sacramento, where they have been known as the Kings, instead of the Royals.

The Reds (Red Stockings) are America's oldest professional sports team yet they haven't made the playoffs in more than 10 years and the Bengals season after season never live up to expectations. On the other hand Oscar Robinson is probably the best basketball player to ever come out of Cincinnati, so it's impressive to see the Celtics match-up well against him. I'm pretty sure this was the farthest the Royals ever got to actually winning a championship before they departed the city of Cincinnati. Interestingly enough I caught this video at work right after I got back from playing some hoops (by myself) during my lunch break. Great stuff...

People were so intimidated of him when going to the basket and rightfully so.  You can see how timid the Royals became after those two blocked shots.

I'm most impressed by his timing on blocks and rebounds.  He could read and react so quickly and the ball almost always stayed in play.

The one other thing I noticed is how everyone on the court tried to play defense without reaching and without fouling.  It looks like they are playing softer, but I think it was just a matter of trying to not get yourself or your team in foul trouble.  Today's game is quite different.

Awesome find, man.  TP.  I'm a little upset that a lot of game broadcasts from the 60's and earlier apparently was destroyed or doesn't exist.

Awesome, TP crownsy...this is the first real extended game footage I've ever seen of the 60s Celtics.  Lot of fun to watch.

Comparing it to today's game, it's really striking how low-intensity a lot of the defense is, especially on the ball.  Russell is of course a monster, but there doesn't seem to be the same emphasis on defensive activity there is today.

Maybe the biggest difference is how skinny all the players were, though.  Comparing this to a playoff game today, and the heights aren't much different, but the changes in bulk are incredible.

Great clip, feel free to post more of these as you come across em.

Another point of note: count how many times you see a player dribble with his off hand. Remarkable to see how dribbling skills have evolved.

So true. tp

BTW in this video Bill is 32, 3 years before retirement.

Really interesting stuff. TP. A few observations...

1. In the modern era, Russell looks like he'd be a slightly shorter KG with a worse jumpshot. He's got the same wiry frame and obviously has great instincts.

2. I can see how Oscar averaged a triple-double. The shooting pace is really fast. Seems like the players had quicker triggers.

3. Like other people have mentioned, the players are thinner.

4. No 3 point line really changes the game and makes someone like Russell more important.
