Soon fans won't be able to cheer too loud since it could be a distraction.

I really don't get how people are getting this.  It has nothing to do with a "distraction", it has to do with a representative of the team and league acting completely inappropriately.

Well that's extreme but, that extreme opinion is why he reluctantly regrets it as well.

I wish he would have just paid the fine and left out the regret.

The dude tossed a towel 5 ft in the air lol.. Talk about blowing something of no consequence out proportion.  Not surprising though.

I am confused as to what rule he broke that warrants such a fine. Is this just being called conduct unbecoming of a GM or some nonsense?

Devil Stern needs to relax with his fines. If ever a group of people deserved to be publicly scrutinized it's NBA refs.

He embarrassed himself, his team, and the league.  I think that is what it is based on.  If they allow that, it sets a bad precedent for what they allow from other team employees/owners.  And you KNOW Mark Cuban would be making a huge stink.

This is what I have a problem with. Who did he embarrass?  As a fan, I wasn't embarrassed. I don't think the league was embarrassed either.  I believe Danny got fined because people made a big deal out of it.

You're a Celtics fan though.  We are biased.  If that was Danny Ferry, I guarantee you that we would absolutely ripping him apart for being immature an unprofessional.

Not 'we'.  You maybe.  I wouldn't waste 2 seconds of my life caring about something so meaningless and trivial.

I wouldn't care either, but the amount of time C's fans complain about Lebron and Kobe, I think it would be the same thing with a GM.

Absolutely, and Danny knew it was immature and unprofessional, thus apologizing before it got very far with the media. It's not so much what he did that bothers the league, it's the fact that it was him, and they felt they needed to make an example. I think it's a bit much, but I'm not surprised.

Apparently, they fined him for "creating an unauthorized distraction and for conduct detrimental to the game."

I'd like to see some of these teams' DJ's get fined for all the dang distractions they create with their music and sound effects over the PA system.  Some of it is done on purpose to distract or put down the other team.

"Thunder Sticks" and "That foul was offensive, Paul Pierce!" - ATL

"Make some noise" and "Deeetroit Basketball!" - DET

Mocking sound effects for turnovers and fouls - CLE

I forget the game but it was mentioned on this blog a while back, after we scored the ball the announcer would say "Oh no you didn't!!"

That has to be against the rules!

  • You know my methods, Watson.
This is about image and backlash...  Truth is, David Stern could probably care less.  But when this thing started to take legs, well, he probably felt the pressure to do something.  And if he does nothing, then any owner or GM sitting in the stands would do this now...

So Danny set a precedent and the furor felt it had to be stopped...

This is nothing more than the feminization of sports...  20 years ago nobody would care, but now this matters because the towel union filed a grievance for being tossed in the air against their will...

After further investigation, it seems that Danny was completely justified in throwing said towel. It appears it had been used earlier by LeBron James and given to a fan, the fan subsequently threw it on Danny's shoulder, and he was just trying to avoid being tainted by "Cavalier Cooties". Can you blame him?

And that fan was?  Yup, Robert Horry.

Ridiculous. Danny saw Robert Horry sitting in the upper level and was just throwing the towel back to him.

As a Cavs fan, I would have been upset if he threw the towel at JJ, not up in the air

Danny and Doc should've gotten retroactively fined for this:

This whole thing is absolutely ridiculous!!! I just hope & pray the fans make it a point in tomorrows game to bring towels and they all throw them in the air as any member of the cavs is shooting. What's next is lebron going to be fined for throwing powder in the air before the game? It distracts the other team & they can't focus on the tip off  :P Classless , RUDE!!
