Much ado about nothing, he deserved a fine for it but I like that our GM gets so into the games that he'll act like he's still a player.

Exactly.  It was great to see as a Celtics fan.  But if I were the commish, I would have fined him too (based on the way they do fines now).

  • Law mercy!
I am confused as to what rule he broke that warrants such a fine. Is this just being called conduct unbecoming of a GM or some nonsense?

Apparently, they fined him for "creating an unauthorized distraction and for conduct detrimental to the game."

I'd like to see some of these teams' DJ's get fined for all the dang distractions they create with their music and sound effects over the PA system.  Some of it is done on purpose to distract or put down the other team.

"Thunder Sticks" and "That foul was offensive, Paul Pierce!" - ATL

"Make some noise" and "Deeetroit Basketball!" - DET

Mocking sound effects for turnovers and fouls - CLE

Makes perfect sense to me.....fine the guy for doing what any Boston fan would do.   ::)

Give me a break.  I thought it was hilarious.  I mean, he is the GM of the Celtics right?  Wasn't he just trying to help his team?

Any Boston fan would complain about the refs too.

The fact is, these guys are not fans, they are representatives of the teams and the league.  I don't necessarily agree with it, but this is consistent with how the league has dealt with this type of thing.

This should be another sign to the fans that the team and management are all on board with doing whatever they can to be successful now go out and show your appreciation this Friday.

There better a white out of towels.

Save the lame excuses about the team being the cause of quiet crowds.

I think Danny's apology was heartfelt and certainly appropriate, but the league is walking on pins and needles lately, and feel they need to over-react to every little indiscretion. Whatever ... the fine doesn't add up to much in Danny's grand scheme of things. It's a bit absurd, but then, that's typical for Stern and his crew.  ::)

Even as a Cavs fans I think the fine is absurd.  It is punishment enough to Ainge how embarrassing the whole incident was.  I'm sure he feels pretty silly (as he should) about doing it.

Celtics should distribute towels to all the seats behind the baskets, and have them throw 'em up in the air as a Cavs player is shooting a free throw.  That would be a great 'eff-you' to David Stern.

It's just so silly to me.  The towel didn't go onto the court and hit a player, Hickson made the free throw, and the Celtics still had a lead of over 20 points.  I can understand the league saying "don't do it again," and making an example out of him, but to actually fine him?!?!

During the Celtics-Heat series there was a moment in the Garden when Wyc Grousbeck was upset about a call or something that Jermaine O'Neal had done.  He stood up from his seat underneath the basket, and nearly walked onto the court while talking trash to Jermaine O'Neal.  I don't know if anyone else remembers this, but it was a really crazy moment.  It's amazing to me that this would go unnoticed and be allowed by the league but that Ainge throwing a towel in the air would.

Distracting people during free throws is part of the game, and I have to imagine that this would have gone unnoticed if it had taken place in the Garden.  I understand he's a GM, but I wouldn't have had a problem if an opposing team's GM had done that to us under the same circumstances.

He probably said he feels silly but, he probably doesn't and rightfully so.

Soon fans won't be able to cheer too loud since it could be a distraction.

I really don't get how people are getting this.  It has nothing to do with a "distraction", it has to do with a representative of the team and league acting completely inappropriately.
