Ray Allen. Hard to see him staying in Boston, but at least Allen (19 points, 51 percent shooting) is proving in the postseason that he can still help somebody at his age (35 in July). Can you see him taking the exception and joining Wade and another free agent in Miami?

"Hard to see him staying in Boston"

Do you guys think so? It seems whatever we've heard from Ray is that he wants to finish his career here. It's been us the organization that's tried to trade him away.

But a lot of fans from other teams seem to think Ray will leave. E.g. loads of Bulls fans think that they'll get a max free agent and Ray Allen this summer.

Thoughts?

I'm thinking he moves on.  It would be part of the C's managing their transition beyond the Big Three.

I think he'd have to take a large pay cut to stay here.  Having said that, Ray Allen is one of the only players in the NBA who I could see shelving his pride to do that.

There are only a certain number of teams that can afford to sign a free agent to more than the MLE.  I believe that Ainge should and is willing to sign Ray Allen to a contract that is more than the MLE.  So, the main problem is if a team is willing to toss something like a three-year $27-million contact at Ray Allen. On the other hand, I think Ray Allen will be worth 3 years and $18 million, even if he spends that last year as a reserve with a tradeable contract.  Perhaps especially if he is a tradeable contract.

Things might be different if Marquis Daniels had played well enough to be seen as a solid starter, but there is no clear replacement for Ray Allen.  Is Tony Allen a starter?  Do you expect Doc to play a rookie?  Are you expecting a shooting guard signed for the MLE?

Nah, Ray will be back. That's just wishful thinking on their parts.  They're just mad because their prediction of Cleveland dominating us is not coming true. ;D

This writer isn't the first to suggest this. I remember reading similar things in both local Boston newspapers(Globe and Herald) just before the trading deadline.

I myself don't necessarily agree. I think once Ray remained with the team through the trading deadline because Danny couldn't get proper value for him in a trade, the Celtics resigned themselves to the idea that what was in this team's best interest was to keep the core(starters, Baby, Tony) together through the end of the 2011-12 season

agree completely.  Ray's not going anywhere.  He likes Boston, will have a starting role and will be paid more than if he went elsewhere.  He's going to take a major pay cut no matter where he ends up so if anything could lure him away it would be a contract for more years than Danny is willing to provide (which shouldn't be more than 2 to coincide with KG's last year).

I gotta think the C's sign Ray to a 2-3 year deal after this season.  My reasoning is that Garnett is up after 2012.  Pierce will likely be reupped for a couple seasons.  These guys can fade into retirement together.

But they probably have 2 more good seasons left in them and with the emergence of Rondo as a top point guard this team can still be relevant.

Plus they will probably play in the regular season like the Spurs, ie a repeat of this year.  Which will put them around 15-20 in the draft over the next couple years.  This is a draft area that Danny does good in.

This gives Danny the ability to make some draft choices. Hopefully some of those guys turn into legit stars, if not you can build them into a couple starters, potential guys, and role players. Remember that this is where Danny was drafting when he built the core of the Allen and Garnett trades.

I think even with these guys in the twilight of their careers over the next 3 seasons, that they are a more relevant and dangerous playoff team then the early-mid 2000 teams with Paul Pierce and no one else.

That or you sign and trade Ray for someone who is younger and makes an immediate impact.  You don't let Ray walk away for nothing.  Without Ray this team is probably drafting 10-15, and the difference between 10-15 and 15-18 in the draft is a crap-shoot anyway.

If I'm not mistaken we have his bird rights so we won't be using the MLE. Personally was hoping if we did trade him he would have been bought out but not sure how his future would have pkayed out with us then since his bird rights are gone.

However since we didn't trade him and he's playing terrific yes he should retire a Celtic. I do think we mAy need a younger more athletic SG not sure where we get him though, then ray could be q deadly 6th man for us.

I still see him as sign and trade bait to a team that ads a FA and want's a compliment.

Of course, if the Celtics keep winning in the playoffs, all bets are off.

This is true.  So, basically, your options for next year are:
A) The players already under contract, drafted players, minimum salary free agents, and whoever you can sign for the MLE

or

B) Option A plus Ray Allen

The obvious considerations are if a quality shooting guard who can be signed for the MLE won't come to Boston without a guaranteed starting job or if ownership would rather give up on next season and seek to minimize the luxury tax rather than put the best possible team on the floor.

I believe it all depends on how the rest of the playoffs go.  If Boston somehow ends up getting to the finals and either wins or plays a long series and Ray is a big part of it (which he would have to be) then I see no way he's not resigned as long as he doesn't demand some unreasonable contract (which would be against my opinion of Ray the person).

I would assume somewhere in the ball park of 9 to 10m a year.

I hope we re-sign him, imo he still has the  most left out of the Big 3....plus I want him to break Reggie's record as a Celtic.

I think Ray will stay, he and both Pierce will take mayor pay cuts, maybe even KG, and we will see another big name in green next season
