there are 99.9999999999999999% of nba fans who think the refs do a poor job. then there is, and we all love him because he is a great celtics fan, vinnie.

the refs did not cost us game one. there were however some bad calls that went against us. the worst thing you can do in the nba is be an underdog and get out ahead double digits in the first half. the refs will do their part to make sure the home team gets back in the game. once the crowd got into it in the third, the refs  felt the momentum and helped out the home team. Conscious effort? Human Nature? Not sure, but the refs did not give a 50/50 effort last night.

Total misrepresentation of my position, but whatever. I have said that NBA refs are not good. However, the difference is, I believe they are equally not good for everyone. And, the fact that 99.999999999999% of NBA fans think they are not good pretty much proves my point. I also think it is ludicrous to suggest that there is some sort of conspiracy either against the Celtics or to make it a Lebronvs. Kobe final, etc., as many posters here have written.

Celtics up 2-0 in 4 series since the big 3 era started and have the same referee assigned to every single one of those game 3's? I want to run the calculations on that because it's gotta be pretty darn high to be coincidental.

How many moving screens did perk set that weren't called? How many times was Shaq hit with no foul call? I guarantee Celtics fans remember all the bad made calls against the team and instantly forget the bad calls and no-calls that went against cleveland.

It's a hard sport to ref. Refs probably call a foul, what, 50% of the time one occurs? On the one hand, that makes a player like James never be in foul trouble. He's so darn big and athletic he only needs to commit about 4 fouls per game and gets called for two. On the other, if refs called everything a foul, Perk and many of the Celts wouldn't last more than a half.

You know, I want to dismiss any kind of "fix" off hand because I want to say it just wouldn't happen, but Jack Donaghy, before he got famous on 30 rock, showed us it can and did happen.

the real reason I want to dismiss it as off hand is because between politics, money, actual real life...there are all sorts of reasons to think the world is against you. I'd rather run the possibility of being naive and say "there is no fix" than look at basketball, one of the few things I can enjoy without inhibition, in a cynical way.

It WAS his to lose. He's the best player by a large margin and so everyone naturally assumed he would win. He did and it was the right choice. That's not corruption in either commentary or result. Take your own advice - watch the games. If you come to the conclusion that Lebron stole the MVP, let's hear that argument. Otherwise, IMO, you make yourself look silly with this kind of thing.

Also, the Thunder did not get jobbed. They lost to a far superior team.

hey i am not a lebron hater. he is an amazing basketball player. i almost bought the nba package one year, mainly so i could see him play. my wife vetoed, but i am not a hater.

he is a very difficult player to ref. just like shaq or randy moss in nfl, they are bigger than everyone guarding them, usually much bigger. if tony allen swipes at bron, and bron barely feels it, is it a foul? i have seen moss get picked on and i have seen him get away w/ murder.

but back to the "conspiracy" people, do i think stern calls all the shots? no. do i think some refs have a vendetta against certain teams. of course. is that human nature? yes, but i would hope that people in positions of authority make unbiased judgments, sadly, i do not think it is the case. tim donaghy picked 85% winners based on his inside knowledge of how refs felt about certain players, certain teams.

The other piece here is that if the "fix" is in, nobody's been able to articulate what it is. Shouldn't Lebron have been in the finals last year if the fix was in? And in 2008? Why didn't he end up in New York instead of Cleveland? Pretty easy to fix that.

Until the conspiracy nuts present a reasoned case, they are just that.

The refereeing is often imperfect, but not to the benefit of one team or another (we haven't seen proof anyway). The farthest I'd go is that they tend to favor the stars. I can live with that.

Let's put it this way. In '08 there was a LOT of National Media attention on the Celtics. And it was great and well-deserved. Tons of talk about being a TEAM, how great it was for KG, Ray, PP to win a title, and how incredibly intense KG was, and how suffocating the defense was...

...On the flipside, I'm sure the rest of NBA fans were as fed up with that as those around here are of Lebron. They'd see KG as an annoying bully, Pierce as a spoiled whiner, and they probably saw a billion fouls committed by that stifling D that were not called, and probably said all sorts of things like "sure, Stern wants to see those guys win before they retire," "Sure, Stern wants the old Celtics-Lakers matchup to drive up ratings," and "Sure, if OUR teams were allowed to play D like that and get all the calls, WE would win too!"

Well, guess what. Calls are missed. But the calls missed are proportional to how good players are. Worked for us great in '08. How many fouls did Pierce draw by throwing his body into contact or shifting a little sideways that made opposing fans scream at the TV? How many blocks did Perk and KG have that elicited similar reactions? Great players MAKE the game hard to ref, not by being famous, or selling tickets, but because by being better than other players they put themselves in positions where the Defense is on their heals, out of position, in the air without a plan, and beat defenders to a spot so that the only choices are: allow a good shot, or foul. Or they get a defender in the air or committed to a spot but beat them to that spot, so it has to be a foul. That's it.
