It's just a marketing ploy aimed at selling more jerseys, IMO

The throwback LeBron jerseys suddenly become more expensive and retro

The new jerseys fly off the shelves across the nation

Nike goes nuts promoting it and sell more Nike LeBron 23 and 6 stuff

And on and on it goes until LeBron is nearing the end of his next contract and he suddenly needs to change numbers again, this time because of.......................

Well, he'll think something clever up but rest assured, it will all revolve around selling more LeBron paraphernalia

I agree ... he has taken "team" out of the sport of basketball, and singlehandedly proven to the world that arrogance is rewarded and even encouraged by some parts of society. An incredible basketball player, and a giant of egotism ... who I wish had never come along.

Seriously? Worse than Mark Blount? Worse than Ricky Davis shooting on the wrong basket deliberately? Worse than Donaghy fixing NBA games for the mob? LeBron trumps them all?

Come on, folks. I absolutely adore Bill Russell; the only Celtics I love more than him are Bird (because I grew up in his heyday) and Cousy (because I'm a short white guy who only wishes he could run an offense like him). He's the ultimate winner in sports. But none of you are throwing hissy fits about #6 not being retired league-wide. How many of you complained when Dr. J wore #6, given that Russell was only out of the game for about 5 years before Dr. J started playing in the ABA? What about any of the current players who wear #6? Or #14? Or #17?

It's LeBron's call what he wants to wear. Who cares what his reasons are, and who cares what number he wears? The only numbers that matter are wins and championships.

I thought that was Kobe? The description sounds like him.

Agreed with you about what matters is winning, but, the only reason we don't care Dr. J wore #6 or anyone else for that matter because they didn't say they are not wearing a certain other number out of respect. What LeBron is doing here, is saying MJ is the greatest, no one else deserves respect like him.

LeBron has no idea who Bill Russell was as a player, or what he meant (and still means) to the game of basketball.

LeBron grew up watching and idolizing Jordan. That's what this is about. This is not about history, it's simply an homage to a personal hero.

Thank you.  It's amazing the jumps in logic people will take to hate someone when the simple fact is their hatred is spawned by jealousy.  People hate Lebron because he plays basketball better than anyone on earth, and certainly better than anyone wearing a Celtic jersey.

Explain to me how Lebron James isn't a team player.

He said MJ is his hero.  I don't see anything about MJ being the greatest in there.

Also, MJ is a greater and far more influential player then Bill.  I'm sorry, he just is.

Far as I'm concerned, he's still two 6s short of the appropriate digits for himself: 666
Coined the CelticsBlog term, "Euromistake."

Haters will find every little nook and cranberry to attack Lebron.

The guy is just changing his jersey number!!!

It's not like he's smoking pot or not standing for the American Flag!!!!

kobe used to be before Lebron exist.

p.s. LB just for the record the reason I say this is more directed towards what bakhu wrote.
and the jersey switch is just another drop of water in a full glass of idiotic readable marketing moves, to overhype that egofilled young man.

Others will argue that it was Michael Jordan that made basketball me oriented instead of team oriented

Yo man, don't knock people for their livelihood.

We live in a free enterprise society.

Don't hate the player man, hate the game.

Why aren't the Jordan haters not hating on Jordan for switching teams?

Shouldn't Jordan be buying the Bulls instead of donning Wizards' blue and Bobcats' orange?
