Terrible fit.  We need a guy who can come in and bang down low and play a little defense like a Tony Battie.

Finley would just be taking up space on the bench.  All he is, these days, is a spot up shooter.  Believe it or not, Tony Allen is much more important than Finley would be.

We could sign both. We still need shooting. All those slashers we have get shooters open looks but we don't have enough shooters one more would be cool. For spot minutes. End of quarter situations, etc....  Tony Battie can also shoot a very nice 10 to 12 footer that would come in handy.

But when would Tony Battie ever play?  Last year I was pining for him when Mikki Moore was getting minutes.  But there's no way Battie cracks the Perk/KG/BBD/Wallace 4/5 squad, and I'm not even sure he could beat out Williams and Scal for a spot if one of the first four guys went down.

At least with Finley he'd be valuable as the fifth wing if TA or Daniels went out or got in foul trouble.

I know that signing a vet like this isn't the answer to the teams struggles but I would like to have a player that can help in practice and will be fine playing not very many minutes, but could still help us in an emergency situation.

I'm not against Battie coming here.  I was just saying that I don't know how you can say that Finley will have no role here and then say Battie will.  Likely neither one could crack our current rotation; however, Finely would likely have the better shot due to poorer depth at the 2/3.

No, we can sign someone up until the playoffs start.  They just cannot be on another teams roster after today, if they want to be on a playoff roster.

So today, we will know which players will be bought out, but there is still plenty of time to sign them.

No. Today is the deadline for players to be released by their original teams and still be eligible to appear in the playoffs with whichever new teams resign them.

Interesting.

Spurs are a playoff team. Why would they release Finley? Probably because he is cooked, as Chris says.

He's still younger than Reggie Miller, right?

Spurs, like the Celts, are a playoff team going nowhere.

I don't trust Doc to use him well. And I like Doc, but the way he uses vets might be his worst enemy.

Did you watch the 2007-2008 campaign?

I'd welcome Finley with open arms. A guy off the bench who can actually shoot the ball well is exactly what we need.

Yes, did you? Remember Sam? Remember Marbury? Remember Scal for the past seasons (though last year he was quite solid overall)?

Doc gets easily enamored with the idea of what the players used to be rather than what they actually are. So yeah, I got my concerns about Finley because I can easily envision a scenario where he's playing like total crap but Doc giving him unwarranted playing time. But hey, if he starts shooting the rock well, who am I to complain?

And this applies to PJ Brown too, but luckily he responded well. And even he wasn't playing good, but was doing just enough to help us along... help us much better than our other bigs (Powe, Davis) during that run. Some forget how crappy he looked early on, and how many outraged posts there were here when he got playing time. But hey, he ended up showing up so we can't knock Doc for that, but the symptom was still there for good or bad.

At the moment I'm quite comfortable with the Tony/Daniels backup situation. If an upgrade is available, take it. But going after an old guy that looks a bit cooked at the moment can be very risky at the hands of Doc, though there's the potential for success, I don't know if the risk might be worth it. Maybe someone of equal/lower talent than Tony but that can really shoot the ball might be a better fit here to insert in a situational basis.

The only one I thought he handled quite well was the Mikki Moore situation. He cut that cord at pretty much the appropriate time I think. And even when we were starving for bigs, Moore rarely saw the floor if at all.

Edit: You know, in all I wouldn't mind having Finley. But I do have my concerns on how he'll be used. I've trusted Doc many times and stood by him many times, but I thought last season and a bit this season he has let me down in quite a few occasions, so I'm losing a bit of my faith in him.

I like what Finley would bring off the court. We could use a veteran leader on our bench similar to the intangibles PJ and Posey gave us . Think he would provide a calming veteran presence.

Bringing in a guy that may not play minutes for us, but serves as a veteran very hungry for a championship would not be the worst thing. I am not sure if Tony Battie has the personality for it,. Pehraps if somehow someone like Finley could come in here and get everyone fired up a little for the rest of the regular season this would be very helpful. I know it is pretty bad that we have to talk about bringing in outside help to fire up the team right now, but the bottem line is the players and doc are not doing it. Lets get someone in there to start a fire. Hell I would take sam Cassel's body and trash talking in practice as an assitant coach just to get the guys worked up. Maybe even punk zaza. I thought Nate might be that guy, but I think he is too worried about fitting in and appearing as a team player for his next contract. A vet min guy desparate for a championship may not face same issues.

Some people have been knocking Danny but he has us in a nice posistion to get a few guys, Finley or other that can help the team in a certain area or 2.
Finley doesn't seem like the sort of guy who will complain about a dnp but can also come in a give us good outside shooting and vet pres. if needed.  He won't take ANY minutes from marquis and I doubt any from tony either.  He is however a bench guy who can help spread floor since tony & marquis are not deep shooters.

So far I like the idea of trying to pick up Finley and Battie for a little insurance. They're over the hill, but might be able to help out for a couple games if someone goes down.
