Big Z was paid for this season up front by the Cavs, which means that in order to be bought out he had to pay the Wizards the difference, which was 1.5 million.  Makes the buy out a little better on the Wizards end and I'm more surprised Big Z accepted that much off given he had to write a check.

Basically, since Washington was below the luxury tax and Big Z had already been paid, they held all of the leverage.

he must've really wanted out of Washington, since his contract for the rest of the year will be no where near 1.5 million.

Isn't the vet minimum, which he will most likely get, exactly that amount?

But it's prorated, so he'll only get like 1/4-1/3 of it.

Cleveland could give him the LLE though and make it up to him.

  • The good ole days.
So what would've happened if he wasn't bought out?  Would Washington have to reimburse Cleveland the prorated amount for time spent on the Wizards this season?

Nothing - he would be Wizards property - he would have suit up for the Wizards ... or stay away like Marbury/Tinsley etc ...

this was a mutual convenience for both parties

I thought they were about $400k over the limit.

that doesn't seem right to me... that they would have him for 25 games and not have to pay him anything.

Cleveland is paying out the ba-cheez-its for their team this year.

I thought I read somewhere that the only contract Z could sign was for the veteran minimum.  Something about no team having enough room to absorb his full contract, therefore he can only sign for the veteran minimum.  I have no idea if that is true, but it does make some sense.

This is probably Zs last year and the cavs are competing for a ring.  I wouldn't have hesitated to pay the money to get back to cleveland.  I'd be so mad if they won a ring and they traded me away midseason after like 12years or however long Zs been in Cleveland.
