If the Celtics have only 4-5 players under contract for $20 million or so entering the summer of 2012 off season they could conceivably add two max level free agents to a core of Perk, Rondo and a couple draft picks
Chasing after top level FAs is a risky business for a team like the Celtics located in (a) a state that taxes income and (b) a cold weather place.
A less risky option would be to trade for a top level player (the way DA did for KG and to a slightly lesser extend RA).
We traded a half decade of first round draft picks away as assets to get Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett
Al Jefferson
Delonte West
Gerald Green
2 First rounders to Minnesota
1 First rounder to Seattle
Exactly what assets are the Celtics going to have that will allow them to trade away to get players the caliber of players they could sign that summer while giving up nothing
Don't forget the #7 that became Brandon Roy, who was traded to clear out bad contracts for shorter bad contracts, which eventually became KG (though who could've known).
We'd have to hope someone drafted this year shows some promise (no pressure, Danny).

I think we need to dream big with the MLE: Hope to have at least a deep playoff run this year to make the team attractive, and blow the full MLE on one impact player. We'll have PG and the big spots locked up already, so we can blow it on one solid wing. Unfortunately, that type of player will want a contract that goes past 2012/KG era.
Mike Miller is 29, and looking at his last chance at good money. He'll want 5 years.
I have fantasies about T-Mac taking the MLE. Dream big, right? If he took it, it might require 5 years guaranteed, with a player opt-out. He'll probably get better offers, but his clock is ticking and I don't think he'll do all that much better. He might want to win for a change.
Outlaw, I think, will be restricted this summer. Clips will match an MLE offer for him.
Not that many options for this summer...but using the MLE to keep Quisy shouldn't be Plan A, though I like him very much.
