I think the Captain gets shooter and scorer mixed up as synonyms.
Once you are labeled 'the best' you want to stay up there, and you can't do it by loafing around.

he was being silly and enjoying winning ... i think in a calmer moment he might ackowledge that there are better shooters out there (thought not as many as you'd think) ...

Steve Nash is far and away the best shooter in the league

Nope he is sticking with it....

His bravado took center stage as he accepted the champion's trophy at midcourt. In an interview broadcast on television and throughout the arena, Pierce suggested he was one of the best shooters in NBA history, drawing an audible groan from the crowd. But he didn't back down from the statement. "I would say I'm one of the best -- I've always said this and I tell this to the guys on my team," said Pierce. "I've always been known as a pure scorer, and I've always said if I just sat outside and shot 3s, and just really focused on that -- coming off of screens and spot-up 3s -- and shot six or seven 3s a game, I would probably be more known as one of the greatest shooters in NBA history. "I take the opportunity 3s and I think I'm one of the better shooters. I've proved that this year with my percentage and the way I'm shooting the ball," he said.

Who cares at this point; he can talk the talk, and walk the walk. Pierce we love you.

People will still insist it was a joke and that he doesn't really believe it.

One reason why Pierce isn't even in the top shooter discussion is the slow release and the fact that he can only shoot the 3 while wide open. He cannot pull up quickly off the dribble like Ray, nor does he have the House-like quick release.

He was joking when mentioning it, but it doesn't mean that there's not some truth in there on what he thinks of himself and on what confidence he has on his game. Still, he's joking when he's throwing all these lines around. It's just like trash-talking, he kept mentioning his teammates, so there's some inside jokes in there too.
