Just throwing it out there.  What if Ainge decides to clear those two contracts to get a player now?

Let's say Atlanta want to make sure they get something for Johnson.  So they trade Johnson, Evans and Collins for Pierce and Walker.

I doubt it. First, because I doubt he would get fair value in return. Second, because the fanbase would panic and anything short of another title would be secondguessed to death.

Just look at the Powe situation: if things don't go right, people will forget or ignore the health of the player let go and treat him as the missing piece.

I think Pierce is a possibility. You could treat his contract as an expiring knowing assuming he will opt out at the end of the season.
KG I doubt because he still has years left on his contract.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz

This one has gone around for a while, but a trade centering around Garnett and Bosh should at least be out there. If Toronto definitely isn't going to re-sign Bosh, then at least they get a very good player for him. For the Celtics, we get much younger and it is a step in the right direction for our future.

Outside of a renegotiation with the Cs for more years (and therefore guaranteed money) there is absolutely zero chance Pierce opts out IMO.

I don't see it with KG.  The years remaining on his contract and injury concerns should scare off most teams.  Plus I just don't see the organization green-lighting any moves involving him.

Pierce?  I don't know.  I severely doubt it but there might be a 5% chance of it happening.

Why?

Some team might look at Pierce or KG as the final piece to their team.

Ainge might decide he can make a bigger impact on the team trading those two.

I am just putting it out there that Ray might not be the only big time player in trade discussions.

I think it would be highly difficult to move KG and get any kind of value in return.

Would the Heat take him for J O'Neal's expiring contract? If you took Cook from them too, they'd then only have about 7 mil under the projected 2010-2011 cap to sign another FA.

What about the Mavs? If you could get them to take Baby as well, and convince Pierce to opt out this summer and take a 3 year deal starting at $14-15mil, the Cs could sign a max FA. But he plays Dirk's position. Could KG play C in the west?

My point is it's pretty far fetched.

As far as Pierce is concerned, it's interesting to imagine how the Cs fanbase would respond to trading the captain. He's likely got the most value, but I just don't see it happening.

Everyone makes it sound like there are all of these years left on KGs contract. He is only signed for 2 years after this one. If he plays next year with Toronto, he then becomes an enormous expiring if he is clearly in decline. KG brings a lot more than physical skills, he brings a mentality, and it's something we all got to witness here in Boston. I understand he isn't quite the player he was a year or two ago, but he is still very good and if they aren't going to re-sign Bosh, then I really don't understand why this wouldn't be an option.

Trading either player would lead to a large downgrade in talent.

They just don't have enough value around the league.

If KG or PP are traded it  won't be be prior to the deadline. If anything, it'll be in the off-season when it's official that a Bosh, Wade, or Joe Johnson is not going to re-sign and then the team is forced to do a sign and trade to get at least something in return.

I think this is likely true. So let's consider this:

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=ygbsj3b

Would you do this deal if you knew the team could a) trade Baby or Sheed for an expiring contract, and b) convince Pierce to opt out and take a deal an extended deal at 5mil less next season? This would likely create enough space to sign a FA like Joe Johnson. Miami is reportly considering something similar for Stoudamire -- would they do this deal?

Note that Miami insists on including Cook because they're also looking to clear enough space to sign a FA to go along with Wade and KG. James Jones contract is not guaranteed beyond this season.

I don't think Miami gives up on an opportunity to add Bosh/Bron/JJ/Amare for Kevin Garnett.

A contender, a team without cap space for a max contract this summer ... I think they would take on Garnett's deal though.

To be clear, after this deal Miami would still have enough space to sign a FA at somewhere around $11-12mil after Wade opts out and signs his new deal (which would start at about $1-2mil less than he's currently paid).
