When I was a kid this was something we were required to memorize in 5th grade, though my Mom had taught me to do so a couple years previously ... it's one of those things I've never forgotten, though it's something I've never really had to use. My mother spent many hours with my older brother and sister and I, teaching us such things, memorizing poetry, learning to recognize artists by their brushstrokes and styles, learning music of every type, absorbing all the arts and nature and sciences, teaching us all to sew, knit, iron clothes, darn socks, cook, bake, etc., feeling that my brother and I would someday be on our own and need to know these seemingly "menial" chores and boring subjects, not just my sister in preparation for marriage/family. I remember how we complained so intensely, and how she took it all in stride with a smile, telling us someday we'd thank her.
Thank you, Mom.
