Why doesn't Perk have a faceup game?

He is shooting 61.8% from the field. Why does he need to face up.  Get him some more touches.

More touches? I think that is the last thing the Celts need to do right now. Perk takes so long to gather himself to shoot it is incredible. And, he has become a deep, dark black hole whenever he gets the ball down there. As for him being the best screener in the league, I would amend that to say the best screener in the league who normally gets called twice almost every game for setting illegal screens. As for the scowl, that is beyond tired. The guy needs to lighten up a little.

He sets illegal screens, which is the price ... but those turnovers are easier to live with.  First, his screens are ALL borderline illegal, so hey, win some, lose some (kind of like getting mad at a power hitter for striking out here and there imo).  Second, dead ball turnovers are a much different deal than in flow turnovers ... not saying they are good, but it's like a missed shot and the defense is not handicapped on the ensuing possession. 

He is a bit of a black hole though a good passer when he decides to.  He is mechanical down there, but more than sufficiently useful.  There are only a couple of good back to the basket centers in the league - but he is a clear Top 10 center, even if it is more in the 9-10 range than the top 4.  For what he costs them, that's pretty darn good.

I am happy with Perk. All he does is set picks and aggressively get post position. And WHEN he gets the ball he tries to make a strong move. That and offensive rebounding are all I ask of him. I'm ok with him being a black hole since most of the time when he gets the ball he is in a position to score.

really?  because he doesn't have a jump shot, at least not one that he and/or the coaching staff trust.  i actually kind of like his little ten footer, but a face up game is impossible without the threat of a shot.

whoever said they cringe and that he and bbd don't have post up games, that is being a unfair.  even if it predictable and "ugly" it does work pretty well, I'd like to see him pass out of there once and awhile, but his post up game has been really pretty good this year.  "ugly" just isn't a relevant criticism when the ball goes in the hole within the flow of the offense.

I remember in the beginning of last season, Perk did some things that made all of us in the game thread go "What the...!!!" He actually drove the ball a couple of times, after catching it outside the paint.

In particular I remember something like a crossover dribble, followed by a move to below the board, jumping back out from underneath it and banking it in.

Now, that might have been a mirage or maybe it has become more and more awesome in my mind over time, but at the time, everyone was impressed!

Also, at the beginning of the season he took a lot of fade-away shots. They used to fall at over 50% if I recall correctly...

Where's that Perk? The confident one?

I hope he comes back.  In the beginning of the season he was doing an above average job on the offensive end.  Midway through the season he started looking horrible.

It's kind of like saying, why can't Rondo (or Marquis) shoot threes? 

Certain players have limitations. 

I'm sure he could take any of us off the dribble, but not in the ultra fast, ultra strong NBA.

That game was last year, against CHA.

He just needs confidence to use it more. he has been 5th option on this team for years, and has played his role Extremely well for us.

Don't get me wrong - of course I'd love for the man to average 14 pts, but throughout the years it has been his interior Defense and Toughness that has brought us wins.

The interesting thing is that Kendrick averaged 13-14 pts, 12 rebs and over three blocks for us when KG went down and Perk was our only low-post threat in the playoffs in 08-09, especially after Powe went down.

This injury sets him back, too - he would normally work on his game this time of the year, but he needs to get well 1st. We aren't beating LA without him.

J.O will hold it down for now, but we need Perk - and IMO the face-up game, while nice to see consistently, is not an issue.

And I would be more worried about the fact that he still puts the ball on the floor rather than a lack of face up game... Like seriously, how many times does Doc have to tell the guy over the course of a 6 year career to NOT PUT THE BALL ON THE FLOOR after every freakin' rebound!

Good Point. He was doing better in this category, but seemed to regress a little.

Because he's terrible...  Perk is a career backup player, but because the NBA is so weak in the middle these days, he's a starter who has numerous limitations in his game. 

But I just wish he'd learn to keep the ball above his head or stop with his incessant need to take that one dribble on an offensive rebound...  I have little hope that Perk will ever be more than a guy who makes layups or a right-handed jump hook as the whole arsenal of his post-up game...

Well, I wouldn't call him terrible, Andy. He's a bonafide defender down low for us. I think if he played in that Game 7, we could've overcome the Refs - errr I mean the Lakers.

I miss the old days, too - Moses, Hakeem, Zo, Dikembe, Chief, Patrick, Admiral, Kareem.....I love Yao to life, but the poor man can't stay healthy.

Bogut and Kaman are solid offensive Centers, but they don't stop people.

I thought Perk was well on his way after that CHI series in 08-09, myself...he seemed to pick up a lot of confidence with that series.

I cannot really argue with you on the backup comment - Dwight Howard would backup those centers I named.

He's definitely one of the best centers of the last 20 years.
