Just throwing this out there considering Marc Stein's comment on this weekend's dime about Simmons' tweet.

http://espn.go.com/nba/dailydime/_/page/dime-100206-07/latest-chatter

Deng has not been talked about much here, and he's be an interesting addition -- especially considering Chicago's goal to a) build around Rose & Noah, and b) to add as much cap space as possible to make a run at major FAs.

I'm not sold but it's worth discussing. The Cs would be very tough with a line up that would suddenly be the deepest in basketball.

Done -- Deng for Ray is an excellent move.

I don't think Chicago has any interest in jettisoning Deng for cap space though.

before you assume they won't move deng, consider this:

the bulls would have only 20mil in salaries this summer if they do this trade, then tell tyrus thomas to take a hike, including the following players: rose, heinrich, noah, james johnson and taj gibson. they'd also have ray's bird rights if they decided not to renounce them after signing a guy like bosh. wow.

guys like lebron, wade, bosh, jj and stat would be all over chicago.

I agree -- moving Deng is a good idea that creates a lot of incredible options for Chicago.

I just don't think their management is willing to go down that road. They value players over possibilities.

I would do it right away, but I don't think the Bulls would. They didn't want to trade Deng for Kobe not that long ago

excellent point. maybe they've learned their lesson. they can't be stupid enough to ignore the allure that much cap space with that great core and the city of chicago would have on -- say -- wade AND bosh.

I believe it was Kobe who didn't want to be traded to the Bulls if Deng were involved in the trade.

Yeah Kobe refused to go to Chicago if Deng was part of the trade, because it would have left him in Chicago without a sidekick.

Simmons has talked about this a few times on twitter.  Basically he thinks the Bulls should move both Hinrich AND Deng, because then they would have cap room to bring in possibly 3 max contract guys and put them next to Noah and Rose.

I know a lot of people see Hinrich as a viable talent, but I see him more as a bad contract.  I'd do Ray for Deng and Hinrich's bad contract in a second.

Well said, TP. The Bulls are nuts if they hold out to move Kirk and Salmons -- it won't happen. If the can move Deng to Boston or Houston or whoever, and move one of those two in the process ,they should considering they have excellent young pieces and could really make a splash in FA.

I'm a huge fan of Luol Deng, and I would do this trade. Deng would have enormous value for us in the playoffs, guarding guys like Joe Johnson, Rashard Lewis, Lebron James, Stephen Jackson, Gerald Wallace, Kobe Bryant, etc..

However, I'm sure the Bulls would want more than a salary dump for Deng.

Give them all the cap room their little hearts can handle.

Ray and Scal for Deng, Salmons and Hinrich.

They'll have a total of 11.4 million committed and be able to build around Rose and Noah.

Also I'm not exactly sure how it would work, but I believe they could hang onto the cap holds for Ray and Ty Thomas and still be able to sign a max contract player.  So in other words, they wouldn't have to renounce those guys to start chasing the big money guys.  Not sure why this is important, but it might be easier for a guy like Wade to stomach being the first of the big names joining the Bulls if the Bulls say to him, "look... our goal is to bring in you, bosh and lebron... but worst case scenario you'll get stuck playing with Rose, Ty and Ray... just sign the dotted line and we can start chasing another big name".

If they renounced Ty and Ray, they'd be able to sign 3 players to 14 mil a year in this scenario and stick them next to Noah and Rose.

I'm also of the thinking that Deng isn't exactly a good fit with this current Bulls squad and they should consider moving him along with Thomas and others for the right packages.

Bulls should build around Rose, Noah, Gibson, and Johnson. Make that your core. Everyone else should be expendable.

That being said, I don't see Chicago doing this deal.

I'd be more inclined to keep Deng and build around a foursome of Derrick Rose + max contract + Luol Deng + Joakim Noah.

But I can see the temptation in wanting to remove Deng from the picture and trying to sign two max contract players. If it worked out, it would be the better option.

I've been discussing this with Zach Lowe at CelticsHub. He just said the following about Ray's cap hold:

DraftExpress has it at $28M based on the formula of 150 percent of his prior salary, but I’m not sure that’s right based on my reading of Salary Cap FAQ. Consulting the oracle (aka Larry Coon).

Anyone have a thought or angle on this? In any case, it's high, so they could either sign him to something reasonable off the bat, s&t Ray for a good complimentary piece, or renounce him to sign two big FAs.

My understanding of it is that a cap hold can't be more than a maximum contract. So for Ray, that would either be 30% of the cap or 105% of his previous year's pay.
