I have to admit, I really disliked Sheed before he came to Boston ... I never liked his attitude or lack of energy, or his propensity for blaming his weaknesses/mistakes on
anything other than himself. But after he was here I welcomed him and gave him the benefit of the doubt, focusing on his attributes and what he could add to this team coming off the bench. I have to say now that I'm not the
least bit surprised about what's happening ... this is just Sheed being Sheed, folks, and coming to the Celtics has not been the magical transformation that we had hoped for.
Hate to say it, but he is just plain lazy on the court. He's very often reluctant to take it to the paint and post-up, (even though that's probably the best and most effective part of his game), does not concentrate on defense or try to take charges, very rarely goes to the floor for a loose ball, loves to just walk it up the floor and launch three-point bricks, (a few of which go in), and can not stop running his mouth if his life, (or the good of his team), depends on it.
If he could try to put the team before himself for once, move his feet on defense, get his post game going, get out ahead on the fast-break, and stop flapping his gums, not only would he be a huge benefit to this team, but he would secure himself a lauded place in NBA history. That's how good I think his post game is, (or could be), but I honestly don't think it will ever happen ... especially this late in his career.
Sheed does what he needs to get by, and very little more ... that's just who he is. The Celtics knew what they were getting when they went after him, and like the rest of us, hoped for a renewed effort and transformation for the sake of getting a ring and being part of a championship team. It's a shame that he doesn't fully realize the opportunity he has now, because I doubt it will ever come again for him. We can complain about it all we want, but again, it's just "Sheed being Sheed" ... we rolled the dice, but they came up snake-eyes.
If there were ever a time for this franchise to make some moves to strengthen the bench, it's now ... I'm just not sure that we'll have the right opportunity. I hate to say it because I can see this guy's potential, and he could be a great player, but Sheed is no longer on my "Must Protect/Keep" list for this team, even for the remainder of the season. Marquis' absence is just magnified by Wallace's lack of effort and production ... he's the anchor guy off the bench right now, and he's just not pulling his (considerable) weight. Here's hoping something changes in Sheed's corner, (or his head) ... and soon.
