I don't think that rebuilding on the fly works; at best, it will result in mediocrity.
Agreed -- high failure rate -- something to be highly wary of.
There has to be a plan in place that maps out a way for the team to make sustainable progress while rebuilding. Too many of these teams only have one or two moves thought out and then get stuck in no-mans land when they realize they don't have the flexibility personnel wise to make further improvements.
Here's a trade that I think could work for rebuilding on the fly
Bos sends: Ray , TA , 2010 1st round pick
Utah sends: Kirilenko,Korver NYK 1st round pick(top 10)
Why for Boston: I know everyone thinks Kirilienko is way overpaid and I agree,
BUT he has always been a better player as a PF and he is defensive minded so he could fit in. Korver is no where near the player of Ray but he is a great shooter himself to fill Ray's spot.
Kirilenko is going to be an expiring contract next year along with PP. If we let those 2 expire next year we would have about 18 mil in cap space for the 2011 free agents. We would be getting a lottery pick back and we would still have a pretty strong team for the next few years.
For UtahThey have been looking for an all-star wing player for year. By getting Ray and adding him to Boozer and Williams they would be the best team utah has seen since stockton and malone. They would also be clearing Ray and Boozers contract at the end of the season allowing them to off a max contract this off season. They would also get a late 1st round pick and Giddens or Walker if they wanted them.
I would rather keep the big 3 together for one more title run if they were all healthy, but I don't know if we will see that again......
