Buyout candidates for the Celtics? (Merged)

Chris Sheridan put a short list of players that he thinks are likely to get bought out before March the 1st and that the C's would consider signing.

Here is his answer to a question he was asked in the ESPN chat yesterday :

I see them [the Celtics] patiently waiting to see who gets bought out between the end of the trading deadline and March 1, then going after the best of that bunch. Buyout candidates who might fit; Keyon Dooling, T.J. Ford, Mark Blount, Tony Battie, Jarvis Hayes, Trenton Hassell.

What do you think? Would you rather go for a trade of our expiring "scrubs" for a good player with a terrible contract or wait to see who is bought out and who we could sign?

I say Danny should go for a trade because buyouts are too unpredictable to rely on (whether player X will get bought out, whether he will sign with us or another team, etc). But trading for a player and then signing another player who just got bought out definitely would be the best scenario, although unrealistic.

Plus, the names on that list are not really exciting, and I think we can get much better players with trades...

I don't see Ford getting bought out.  I'd be happy with  Dooling, and would be fine with anybody else on the list, although I don't think they'd crack the rotation.

Yeah, I really think we'll have to make a trade to acquire an impact player this season.

I like Dooling a lot. Seems to be just the right fit. Seems to be injury prone lately, though.

I don't think Blount's handle will allow him to handle the point for us. Maybe he could handle getting water for KG, but probably not.

What? I always thought Battie was a good soldier during his tenure in Boston.

More seriously, I think that the more important question is not "who?" but "why?". At that point of the season, I don't favour bringing on players who offer nothing more than a small marginal improvement over whoever holds the roster spot, if that. Dooling is a decent player - unremarkable but solid offensively, clearly above-average defensively - but what's exactly the point of adding him? Unless we're explicitly addressing a flaw, I'm not in favour of adding players at that point of the season. The flaws that, in my view, need to be corrected are: defence vs. big wings/small 4s; rebounding. None of the mentioned players address those.

It doesn't look like this is the year for players getting bought out....slim pickin's indeed.

I guess if we can't swing a trade I would take a look at Jarvis Hayes. not sure why he never became a dependable player.

Chris Sheridan of ESPN.com writes that the Celtics could add a veteran player to their roster over the next month.

Boston could wait for a veteran to be bought out by his current team and Sheridan listed Keyon Dooling, T.J. Ford, Mark Blount, Tony Battie, Jarvis Hayes, Trenton Hassell as potential fits.

You can understand why Sheridan said Mark Blount. Boston needs height off the bench. KG may be healthy now, but what if he isn't sometime again this season? The possibility is very real. Blount, while vastly inferior skills wise as KG, does some of the same things at about the same length. Big Baby has not been all that great in the limited amount we've seen so far and Shelden Williams has been up and down. Plus, they're both PF height (at best).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating Mark Blount. I think there has to be better options out there. But... you can understand why Sheridan said Blount...
