Celtics guard Ray Allen is in the final year of his five-year, $85 million contract and has begun pondering his future.

Allen's first choice would be to re-sign with Boston, but he understands that the feeling may not be mutual.

"I would love to be here," Allen said. "In my mind right now, for me there's no other place to be. It's a great tradition. This is really NBA basketball to me, being a part of a team and the tradition of winning, a great fan base. But the situations have to be addressed. There is a business connected to it. The team is going to do what they think is necessary. We'll have to make a decision based on how they come to me business-wise."

Allen, who will likely have to accept a hefty pay cut as a free agent on the downside of his career, is open to signing a contract extension with Boston.

"I am a loyalty person. If the opportunity presented itself to get a deal at the current moment as we speak, I would be all over it," said Allen.

"So moving forward, I don't have to worry about how the summer is going to go and long term we at least between myself, Kevin [Garnett] and Paul [Pierce], we know we are going to be here, Rasheed [Wallace] and [Rajon] Rondo. You know what the core is going to be.

Sounds like Ray will happily accept a pay cut to stay with the C'S. If they don't trade him this year I see them signing him to a 2 year 7 mil per contract so that his contract ends along with KG and Sheed . In 2012 we will have a lot of cap space if we don't add anymore high price players in the next few years. Whoever the C's sign in the next few year with the MLE should only be a 1 or 2 year deal.

Does he want to stay with the Celtics bad enough to resign with them after a trade and buyout? That would be an ideal situation.

Ray is a class guy.  That said, if he isn't traded, I think it may be best to allow him to move on after the season.  He will be 35 at the end of next year and I am not sure he will add much more than a veteran presence for younger players, of which we have few.

next year you mean? Do you think Ray would resign with the C'S next year for the MLE? That would be so sweet our roster would look like this

PG: Rondo / vet fa
SG: Ellis / Ray
SF: PP    / TA,Giddens or Walker
PF: KG    / BBD
 C: Perk  . Sheed

That would be an awesome roster

He has a ONE MILLION DOLLAR BONUS if he's on a championship team, and no way the Celts deal him to another contender.  Of course he wants to stay.  He'll probably stay in New England after he retires, so he might as well semi-retire on the Celtics' payroll for the next two years, too.

Point:  Him wanting to stay isn't a headline.

I like your thinking here.

Ray Allen and his NBA all-time greatest 3pt stroke for 2yr/14m would be an absolute steal.  You won't get a better player on the 2010 market for that $$.

To take it a step further, if Paul signs a similiar deal in 2011 (say 2yr/18m), we'll be in good position to reload in 2012 with a bit of Cap wiggle room along with KG's expiring contract to deal.

I say keep Ray and Paul around till they retire, and use KG's expiring deal in 2012 to add an impact player to compliment Rondo and Perk.  IMHO, that is our best bridge to the future that doesn't sacrafice the our current window.  And we'd only have to deal with one-semi down year (where we'd still make the playoffs, and be the low sead no one wants in the 1st round).

I bet Ray, thinks he is worth $9 or $10 million. Half his contract now. He and his agent, probably thinks that would be a nice discount. :o
Once you are labeled 'the best' you want to stay up there, and you can't do it by loafing around.

Since the article brought up a 10-11 millon per year figure, let's compare that to Ray's market value this summer.

What teams have cap space that would blow it to sign a 35 year old shooting guard for more than the MLE?

Exactly, that's why I threw out the 7mil a year for 2 years idea.  There is no way any team with cap space is going to blow it on a 35 yr old SG. The best he will likey do is get the full MLE from another contender. The 7 mil per year would be better than the full MLE.

It depends on how things work out.  I think there will be a market for him among teams that are looking to compliment their stars, and don't want to overpay for an unproven young guy.  Sign and trades are also still very possible.  And of course it will also depend on which teams lose out on the big prizes.

Right now, it is way too early to tell how it is going to shape up, because we have no idea how things will shift at the trade deadline, as well as which players will actually leave their current teams.  But I anticipate after the max guys go (Lebron, Bosh, Wade, Johnson, Amare), a guy like Ray, who is likely willing to take a shorter deal than the younger second tier guys becomes very attractive to teams hoping to contend.

Ray would want to be in Boston.

Is that even possible.? I don't know of any contending team that will have more than the full MLE . If that's the case then I don't see Ray leaving for another contender because the C's could match or top the full MLE Offer from another contender.

I almost think the C's might have to insult him with the offer to get him to leave.

It's also worth noting that the  medical care his son receives is something of a draw to the area for him.
