Rajon Rondo + Ray Allen + Paul Pierce are all playing about 36 minutes so there's 12 free minutes at each perimeter position.
(1) 12 minutes apiece for Eddie House + Marquis Daniels + James Posey
(2) 18 minutes apiece for Marquis Daniels (PG + SG) + James Posey (SG + SF)
(3) 12 minutes for House + 16 minutes for first backup wing + 8 minutes for second backup wing
(4) 12 minutes for House + 20 minutes for first backup wing + 4 minutes for secondary backup wing
Or you could add 6 minutes to the 12, since having Marquis and Posey would allow Pierce and Ray to get more rest during the season.
36 minutes is way too much for both of them.
I'm happy with 36 minutes apiece for them. I'd like to see KG move up to 34 minutes a night (30.7 currently).
But reducing their minutes is a good option too. It'd be my second choice but a lot of Celtics fans would like less minutes for those players so I'm probably in the minority there.
An extra 6 minutes on the wing -- 15 + 15 for Posey and Daniels or 20 + 10 or remove House from the equation and go with 21 minutes apiece for Marquis and Posey.
The thing is, we can quibble about whether Pierce and Allen should be playing 36 mpg, but there's two things we need to recognize.
1) They're playing 36 mpg now anyway.
2) They'll likely play even more in the playoffs.
Come playoff time we're probably looking at less than 30 mpg of backup time for the 1, 2, and 3 positions. In theory, Marquis Daniels could play pretty much all of it if we so choose (though foul trouble and rotation issues make that very difficult).
While I love Posey and would've sacrificed a lot last year to bring him back, I don't see the benefit all that much. If we want to knock Pierce and Allen's minutes down in the regular season, we can play Tony Allen more. As Ainge has already shown, he's not afraid to lose some regular season games in terms of long term health.
And come playoff time, I don't see a huge value in paying a guy as much as Posey makes to split what looks to be 20 minutes per game at the 2/3 that Daniels could very well handle by himself.
Again, I don't want Posey. But what if someone gets injured? Our wing depth is poor, patricularly considering Daniels and TA's history of injury. We should look to find another legit player with some versitility.
I'm OK with that. My only two questions are these:
1) If Pierce or Allen goes down, is anyone out there good enough to still allow the C's to win?
2) If Daniels or Tony goes down, can the C's still win with House/Daniels/Scal or House/TA/Scal?
Given that I believe the answer to the first question is no and the second question, yes, I'm not as concerned about wing depth. Still, if the opportunity presented itself, I'd be all for it.
As for Posey, the only way I'd be OK with getting him back is if ownership was still OK using the MLE next summer even with his salary onboard. Other than that, I think the money can be used better elsewhere.
