Need Advice: Gift for a hospitalized friend

Ok so my friend is in the hospital (he may actually be home now I'm not sure).  Looking for some good gift ideas to help cheer him up.


Here's the situation:  jaw wired shut and bruised both of his orbitals. 

Maybe some of you have had your jaw wired shut, or bruised an orbital, and know of what would be the perfect gift idea for a situation like that (if any ).

Unsure of the budget as of now.  I may just be paying for this, or 50 people might be chipping in like $5 each.

A little background on my friend: 23-24, Male, Jets fan, casual Yankees fan.  already has season Jets tickets (just in case somebody might suggest tickets). In shape, likes to run, comes from a pretty well off family, so probably has most of the material things he would need. 

Any suggestions?

I have a reputation as a decent gift giver in my family

The very first thought I had for good or ill was "Can you get him a wine?" I think I thought that even before I opened the thread. For some reason it went with "gift".  But now that I think about it if I were in pain and had a jaw wired shut I might love some wine and a big straw.  Unless it will mess up some medication

My wife got me a book for Christmas that I always wanted to read and I'm liking it.  Maybe some classic that he would like. Help him escape.

I hear laughter is the best medicine so unless you want to go in and laugh at him for a few hours maybe a big book of his favorite comic strip

Video games? 

Some junk magazines.  Sports. Whatever.

I'm running low on ideas here.

What the heck did he do to sustain those injuries?

Sounds as though someone beat him up. 

If this is the case, some Steven Seagal movies wont go astray (for when he can see).  I suggest Out For Justice or Above The Law.

If he's not a fan of Seagal, perhaps a Chuck Norris flick or two.

Or, with the $ you pool together, do as Santa says and Ho, Ho, Ho!!.

That will make him happy.

I wouldnt consider people who give wine as a present to have "reputations of decent gift givers".

To me its one of those things you get people when you cant think, or couldnt be bothered to think, of a decent gift.

Also, the question begs....white or red.   Chardonnay or Sauvignon blanc.  Merlot or Shiraz.   Arrrrrrggggghhhh

You go with appelation controlee French red wine with only one grape type as opposed to the blend, and I'd go with Merlot cause of it's general go with everything smooth reputation, but spend a little money on it.

But I haven't put much thought into it, so I don't know
