Speaking of There Will Be Blood, I saw there is a new Daniel Day-Lewis movie coming soon.  Such an interesting career.

One Battle After Another.

I fully ignored my dislike of Paul Thomas Anderson going in and had an open mind ? and I loved it.

The main character (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a domestic terrorist, so Im not surprised by the fact that this movie has already become politically divisive, especially given whats happening in the country right now. He is part of a revolutionary militia called The French 76. While it is obvious the group is a radical left-wing organization, their ideology is kept pretty vague, and the politics in the movie are not heavy handed. PTA, unlike many writers these days, wasn?t look to lecture the audience ? which I appreciated.

Its kind of sad that this movie is being looked at by mainstream media so closely through a political lens ? because, above all else, it?s just an astonishing piece of filmmaking. It effectively blends comedy and suspense and kept me captivated for 3 hours. I can?t remember the last movie I saw in theaters that made me feel that way.

While DiCaprio gives an engaging performance as always, it was actually Sean Penn who stole the show, playing one of the most memorable villains Ive seen on screen in years. It reminded me that hes one of the best to ever do it and why I have been a fan of his since Fast Times.

9/10. Highly recommend.

Saw Roofman in theaters. Really solid flick. Excellent acting by Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst; They really had great chemistry.

It?s a shame the director - Derek Cianfrance - does not put out films very often, because I think he is one of the most interesting directors working today. All four of his films are really great.

Amazing thing to me about DDL is that I don?t think I could pick him out of a lineup. Maybe it?s just me?  Looks different in every film - I really don?t know what he actually looks like.

Saw Frankenstein and Bugonia - thought they were modern classics, highly recommend both. Will be buying them on Blu Ray as soon as they release (Yes, I still buy physical media).

The most recent Jurassic Park was meh.  Not terrible, but not really good, either.  Very much paint by numbers.

I saw Bugonia last night with Emma Stone and Jessie Plemons.  They both were excellent, but he really was amazing.  There were a lot of ?should I laugh or be horribly disturbed? moments mixed in.  Sometimes volleying back and forth from moment to moment.  Some very hard looks at mental illness, medication, PTSD and probably a few more behavioral diagnoses.

I really enjoyed.  There?s a bit of gore.  If you?re weak of stomach with that be aware.

I?m a huge fan of Jesse Plemmons. I saw that he was in Bugonia - doesn?t surprise me that he?s great in it.  Looking forward to seeing it.  He was great in Friday Night Lights and absolutely brilliant in Breaking Bad.

Watched Frankenstein last night on Netflix.  The actor (Jacob Elordi) who played the monster was excellent.  The movie is long but I enjoyed the story which seemed at times to stray from Mary Shelley's novel.  This version is not what I would call a horror movie but does have plenty of gore and blood.

Watched Lady Bird last night for the first time since I saw it in theaters 8 years ago. Truly one of the best coming-of-age films ever made.

Side note: What ever happened to Lucas Hedges? In the late 2010s it seemed like he was in every movie that came out. Besides Lady Bird, he was in Manchester By The Sea, Honey Boy, Mid 90?s, Boy Erased, Ben Is Back, Moonrise Kingdom, and more. I thought for sure he was poised to be the next big thing - then he just disappeared. Timothee Chalamagne became the much bigger star from that generation which, in my opinion, is a shame because Hedges is such a better and more dynamic actor.

Weird fact I found in my Lucas Hedges research: His father wrote the novel Whats Eating Gilbert Grape. Very random but very cool.
