Perk Fans?

Perk's low post game is so far better than it was a couple years ago it's ridiculous.  He's WAAAAY better.  And he might be the best defensive center in the league.... or at least the only center in the league who can make Dwight Howard look human.

My biggest problem with Perk was always that it seemed to take him 5 seconds to collect himself after receiving a pass.  We'd dump the ball into him, he'd collect himself... bring the ball down...  dribble the ball once... bring the ball back up... have a cup of tea... and eventually the defender would catch up to him and he'd go to the line.  He's gotten a lot better about that.  I still don't think he's super "explosive", but his reaction time is far better.   His footwork and touch are light years beyond what they once were.  Every once in a while he wings a pretty flat bullet hook into the rim, but I'm starting to buy into the idea that Sheed is teaching him patience down there.

5 game win streak Perk's stats: 30.4 minutes 16.2 points,  10.2 rebounds, 2.2 blocks... 81% shooting.

Really hope he keeps it up.  He's my favorite player to watch right now.

During the losing streak, and I started the "I need more Perk" thread suggesting that the team needed Perk to play around 30 minutes a game, (one of the few thread I have seen where everyone agreed) I never expected to see so quickly such clear proof.

Credit the Celtics coaches for making such a good adjustment to the rotation.

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, as I don't want to move this thread into what could be perceived as a negative direction. But I'm curious... during last night's CSN postgame show, Tommy was answering questions in the studio from fans. One of the questions was something along the lines of whether Perk has the ability to carry the team on his back, given how much he has been improving. Tommy in a roundabout way, essentially said no without giving reasons as to why not.

Maybe I'm just blinded by how impressed I am with Perk, but he's still young, and he's shown such improvement. I can't imagine why it'll stop here. I'm curious as to what it is about Perk that doesn't allow him to carry a team on his back in the future?

I don't think Perk would be a good source to "put the team on his back."  He is great at being a piece to the puzzle.  Great defense, solid presence inside, a few reliable post moves.  These qualities are all great, but if Perk became the first option on offense for example, I think that wouldn't work out well.

I don't think he's a centerpiece of an entire team, I think he more of a fantastic compliment.  I see him as a Robert Parish kind of guy.  Parish was great, but a team revolving solely around him wasn't nearly as useful as him being a compliment to the other big two on the team.  

That's just my opinion.  But still we'll have to see where this goes, because Perk has shown that the sky is the limit since he keeps getting better.

To answer this, I think he is right. Perk is a great complimentary player that is an important part of a whole. But he isn't the gas that makes the engine run, he's just the pistons, or some other indispensable part of the motor.

But Perk doesn't have what it takes to say "Give me the ball and I'll carry this team to victory." At least not yet, though, more than likely, he never will. He might be All-Star good. He's not superstar or superduper star good.

A jumpshot. He will never be unstoppable in the post so he will need something to complement it. By unstoppable I mean Shaq, Wilt, McHale etc. Very few bigs can carry a team without any semblance of a jumpshot. Perk has shown he can step out a bit but he would have to start hitting it with consistency and with people in his face.

By the way that's not too negative. If anything you questioning a negative comment about Perk makes it positive! Great addition to the conversation..TP!

Is everyone in agreement that the past 2 games have been the best 2 of Perk's career? Atleast in the context of a complete offensive/defensive performance. The 7 blocks against the bucks was nasty.

Perk has definitely been working on his offensive game. I rate him among the top 3 Centers in the NBA as a defensive center, but he is definitely catching up on the offensive end.

And I agree with Nickagneta on the jumpshot for Perk, and good post by pengaloo as far as Tommy Heinsohns' comment on Perk. Once he continues to work on the offensive end and hone his jumper, then he will be able to carry a team offensively.

But boy is he getting close to that stage, IMO. At the rate he seems to be improving, I'd give him another year or so in my guestimation.

A jumpshot would certainly make him more feared on the offensive end, but we still haven't seen how he will respond to double teams and him being a focus of the opposing team's defense.  He's had the luxury to this point of being seen as the 4th or 5th  option (at times, as a non-option) on this team. He will definitely start getting a lot more attention if he continues as he's been, and we'll see how he responds.  He is a good passer, but we haven't seen him pass or maneuver out of the double team very much.  I think he can do it, but I think it's another rung in the ladder.

Besides the offensive improvement and consistency from Perk, I had not thought about how he reacts to the double-team. If he does continue with the high average in points, then he will have to hone that side of his game (passing).

Seeing how hard he has worked thus far, I see no problem with his continued improvement in that area as well.

In a couple of years, we may very well have a Monster on our hands...Perksamonster.com or something
