it could have been FAR worse...the only way i would support this suspension is if one of them said something like "i hear Haddadi has an 'explosive' offensive game", and then laughed knowingly or something...this world is far too sensitive.

Geesh. I wonder how many times Tommy Heinsohn should have been suspended over the years for mispronunciation?

Don't worry, we don't play Memphis till 12/14 and it's an away game so Tommy probably won't announce it, so we're good till 3/10 when the Grizz come to town. but Haddadi has already racked up like 6 DNP-CD's in 12 games so I like Tommy's odds  ;)

I think the most mind boggling part of all this is that somebody was actually at home watching the Clippers/Griz game, and on top of that was actually paying enough attention to actually catch that statement.  I mean look at how many people are actually in the stands at the game.  This blows my mind right there.

Those guys should get suspended for offering zero insight to 2 and a half minutes of highlights.

You should be suspended for wanting to hear insight on a Clippers, Grizzlies game.

Gotta wonder if the announcers made a similar set of comments and mispronunciations about a Russian/Uzbekian/Kyrgystanian player if the announcers would have been suspended?

I can see it being offensive.  Not the pronunciation, that's just a mistake.  It is supposed to be pronounced like "E-Rahn-ian" not "Eye-Rayn-ian".  But that is semantics.  Again, wrong but an honest mistake.

Stuff about "that Iran" and "the real Iran" like they are aliens is a little offensive.  I know an Iranian man back home and went to school with a few, very nice people.  Not freaks from another planet.

And stuff about Borat?  His persona is from Kazakhstan.  That's the same thing as Iran?  I'd be annoyed if I was Iranian.  As a white guy, I just think it is ignorant, and for someone whose job is to speak publicly to a mass of people, unacceptable.

Tommy also says some stuff which is stupid and ignorant.  I'm not giving him a free pass.  My guess is these announcers aren't Tommy's age though.  That does play a factor.

This.

The pronunciation wasn't the problematic part.  It was the part where they acted like the guy was a curiousity - like "Wow, look at that dog playing in the NBA.  It's Air Bud!  Those dogs sure can pass.  Especially their post players.  Not sure about the guards though."

Can you blame them? Look who was playing.

"Tommy also says some stuff which is stupid and ignorant",,,,,,really?   Any examples? He may be a homer and you may disagree with him sometimes, but he's far from stupid or ignorant.
No offense, but you're coming off as pretty smug.

I don't know if the comments should be called stupid and ignorant, but Tommy has said some politically incorrect things.  Like, after Yao hurt his finger, Tommy saying "That was his chopstick finger, too, he may not be able to eat anymore!"

You got a point there.

Not so much that I was interested, but I figured since they were blabbering anyhow, it would have been nice to here something remotely related to what the highlights were showing.

I'll just be echoing the other responses to the OP, but the mispronunciation seemed to be an honest mistake, the banter after it is probably crossing the line.

Did the link say the complaint was just because of the mispronunciation Roy? or was that only part of the complaint?

I just quoted from the link verbatim; it wasn't me suggesting that the mispronunciation thing was an issue, but rather the authors of the story.

wow.  if you replace Iranian with Italian then nobody cares.  The fact of the matter is there has probably never been an Iranian player in the NBA so yeah it is a natural reaction to be surprised and to make light of it.  If there wasn't a war going on in the middle east then no one would care, just like when Tommy say's the chopsticks bit, or when he say's women can't ref men's basketball.

These two announcers are really funny BTW.  They just improvise all the time.
