The Golden State Warriors come to town tonight and they bring along with them one of the better stories in the NBA over the last couple of years. That's their now starting SG, Anthony Morrow.
Morrow is a 6'5" pure shooting guard that went undrafted out of Georgia Tech. In college he was never a star, being a third wheel for two years to future NBA players Javaris Crittendon, Thaddeus Young, Jarrett Jack and Will Bynum. He did, however, lead his team in scoring two other years but didn't get a sniff in the draft and didn't even get a contract offer until he went to the NBA Summer league for Golden State and shot lights out two years ago.
Now the knock on Morrow has always been that he's not necessarily tremendously skilled or athletic or large for an NBA shooting guard. But here's the thing. What the guy can do, better than almost any other human on the planet, is exactly what shooting guards in the NBA are asked to do...shoot the basketball.
Last year, as an undrafted rookie he led the NBA in three point percentage having the 28th highest single season 3PT FG% ever as a rookie at 46.7%. This year he is shooting 52.4% from the field, 54.1% from three point land, 84.6% from the free throw line and has an eFG% of 64.2% with and eFG% of 61.8% on jump shots, which take up 92% of his shots. I don't know how much everyone follows stats for shooters, but these numbers are off the charts good.
The reason I say to watch this kid is, unfortunately, I watch a lot of Warrior games as my son is a fan of theirs and I could help but fall in love with this kid last year watching at least 40 of their games. This year, he's looked even better and with the turmoil that Golden State is in(trade of Stephen Jackson, the much anticipated and certain to happen trade of Monta Ellis, and injuries to Andres Biedrins, Raja Bell, Ronny Turiaf and kelenna Azubuike), Morrow is probably going to see a lot of court time.
So watch this kid tonight. He's going to be a restricted free agent this off season and if he takes the Warrior's qualifying offer, he will be unrestricted in 2010-11. I think he would be a fabulous addition to the Celtics someday and would be a perfect Eddie House replacement with the ability, if he can round out his game some, to maybe be a starter on a championship caliber type team.
Watch him tonight. Tell me what you think.
