Golden State is having serious problems. They showed their lack of backbone by catering to Stephen Jackson and trading him away. Now Monta wants out as well. He is a talented young player, and he played great at the 2 next to Baron Davis a few years ago. Here's a thought:

Ray Allen

for

Monta Ellis and Speedy Claxton

http://www.realgm.com/src_tradechecker/3/

The starting 5 gets a lot younger, giving us the fresh legs we need, and giving Rondo a highly talented player to play next to for the next 5-10 years. Monta is everything Rondo's not, so I think Monta would be a great complement to Rondo's game.

Perk
KG
Pierce
Ellis
Rondo

Only thing I can think of as to why I wouldn't do this is Monta's height, but I don't think it'd be a major issue with the way we tend to run our lineups small anyways.

Why does GS do it? Because Ray Allen is THE best expiring contract in the league, and would give GS the financial flexibility to start over from scratch.

No more so than any of the other 100+ trade ideas that involve Ray.

I'd think long and hard about doing this. Ellis has his issues, but he's a talent and still very young.

Goodness gracious no. No interest in Monta Ellis ... and certainly not in a trade that costs a player like Ray Allen who's vastly superior to Ellis.

Wow...on paper this is Nearly a no-brainer..Monta is better than Ray in Nearly every statistical category when I compared the two.

He is younger than Ray. Monta is shorter than Ray by 2 in, but still good height at 6'3".

Monta is playing nearly 38 min a game..if this trade happened (not likely), I cannot see why Monta would play less in the Celtics scheme, being how he would be Ray's replacement.

Now for the intangibles..

Is he a better defender? I have not heard of Monta being even an average defender..Ray Allen has definitely improved defensively in Boston..but then again wouldn't Monta?

Clutchness...is Monta known (or capable) of carrying a team and hitting clutch shots? A lot of his talent may be based off of his youth right now, but how heady or crafty is he? Ray is one of (if not) the best in the game in this category, IMO.

I am sure Monta could work in Boston's system. He does have the moped incident, and seems to have an issue with the coach right now. Those are issues that could be taken into consideration.

Overall opinion: As attractive as this appears statistically, I don't think Boston could incorporate Monta into the scheme at this point. The team is built to compete for the Title for this year and next. Any major changes to Big Three and there is less likelyhood of winning it all this year, IMO.

Good discussion, though.

I think Ellis and Rondo in the same back court would cause some redundancy.
Also, a starting front court that is (6’0) Rondo and (6’3) Ellis on a defensive team is a recipe for disaster.

What Ray also adds to this team is spacing. Having Ellis, Rondo, and Pierce on the floor would be too many slashers and in turn Pierce would start relying too heavily on his jump shot rather than attacking the rim, drawing help defenders, and getting to the free throw line.

Spacing and size. Two things that Ray provides that are absoulety essential to the starting five.

Yep.  And a couple weeks ago I would have been less inclined to consider this.  But lately we've been looking a little bit on the old, slow, and lethargic side.  I think Ray is the better player but the deals to give us younger players with lively legs are looking a bit more attractive right now.  I also liked the KG for Bosh proposal from last week.

Ray for Ellis....no way.

Now if GSW would take expirings and throw in a talent like Morrow because they just can't get rid of him anyway else, then I would do it.

I agree that a 6'0 and a 6'3 back court might be a problem defensively. However, as far as having too many slashers, so far the Celtics have shot too many 3's and haven't went to the hole enough. Pierce has been shooting a lot of 3's, KG has shot a lot of deep jumpers I wouldn't mind replacing Ray with someone who gets to the bucket.
Despite the fact that Ellis gets to the basket more than Ray, Ray is a superior player, with a suprerior contract. We would need to get more than Ellis for Ray if they want to trade Ray's expiring contract.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
This is the first thing that came into my mind when I heard Ellis was available- and I guess I would do it, but I don't know that I would necessarily be 'happy' about it. Being able to rebuild while still being a contender is what every team wants. Looking at Ellis' career stats, he really does have it all in nearly ever category (except 3pt shooting and I guess ft shooting), but he is still solid in those categories.

I don't know that I would be too into getting Claxton, though. I agree that Morrow would ultra-ideal, but I may even take someone like B. Wright back. I know these younger, skinny players often don't work out for us (Moiso, O'Bryant), but maybe he would be worth a look.

All this being said, I can't imagine it happening, but it is something to think about. This is a pretty awesome package if you are just looking at what you can get for Ray's expiring.

I've seen a couple of people stating that when it comes to stats that Ellis is much better than Ray. Ellis has slightly higher scoring numbers but come on people, the Golden State pace is the polar opposite of Boston's and Ellis is given a green light, like everyone else in Golden State, to shoot whenever and from where ever they want. In Boston, Ray does not enjoy such luxuries.

Is there really any doubt that if Ray was put on the Warriors he would be jacking up 23-25 PPG as an average, which would be much more than Ellis has ever put up in his career?

Very Good Point...TP.

I had not considered the reverse of my earlier post in this thread..with that being said Ray would probably be in that range you mentioned..easily (23-25 ppg in GSW)

TP for screwedupmaniac for proposing a trade that doesn't include Scal or Tony.

That said, I wouldn't do it.

The Golden State player I covet is Beidrins, not Ellis.
